How Prescription Discount Cards Help Patients Save Healthcare Dollars
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on October 01st, 2009
Anyone is eligible to receive prescriptions at a discounted price regardless of their income, age or pre-existing conditions. There is a new prescription discount card available to anyone that needs it, and it is free of charge! For too long, Americans without insurance have been paying full retail prices for their prescription medicine but with this new program they will now have someone on their side.
There are several companies that have programs to reduce the cost of prescription medicine to those patients without insurance coverage. This has developed into quite an opportunity to save healthcare dollars with with cardholders in all 50 states. Usually, these prescription drug discount cards are accepted at over 50,000 local and national pharmacies.
Several non-profit organizations and clinics distribute the cards as a way to fill a need and help their community during difficult times. The discount cards have been mailed to local United Way agencies, clinics, physician offices and pharmacies in addition to local community health centers. These cards are not insurance, but they can reduce the cost of your prescriptions by up to 40 percent or more. The patient simply presents their card to the pharmacy and they are guaranteed that they will pay either the discounted price or the pharmacy’s retail price, whichever is lower.
There are patients that are saving $25-$35 on a prescription and that is money they can use to buy groceries, pay rent or pay the utility bill. They are also able to get the prescription medicine they desperately need. The cards are available at no charge to anyone and there is no limit on how often they can be used.
Another way that certain companies are able to help uninsured patients is through Prescription Assistance Programs. These programs are operated by each drug company and each one is a little different. If a patient qualifies however, they will receive their prescription medicine at no charge. To qualify you need to be uninsured and your household income can’t exceed certain guidelines.
There is a tremendous need for medication assistance right now, especially since a lot of people continue to lose their jobs. A lot of patients need help now more than ever.
