Need a doctor’s excuse note for school or work but do not want to invest the time and money to actually visit the doctor? Well, look no further than the Internet. Thanks to the emergence of “telemedicine,” you can obtain a printable doctor’s excuse online, through reputable websites that specialize in online doctor consultations. Telemedicine has made it possible to communicate with doctors via telephone and online, paving the way for a new future in medical consultations using the infrastructure already in place and resources that people use on a daily basis.

With the ease and accessibility of the Internet in the Information Age, it is only logical that necessary services such as healthcare utilize new technologies for increased efficiency. Services that provide online doctor consultations and prescriptions exist with the understanding that telecommunications is a tool to improve the service that the health care industry provides. Within the scope of telehealth is a wide range of services - from consulting a qualified, licensed online doctor to receiving prescription refills to obtaining a doctors note. Many healthcare systems have integrated this form of medical care; and more are following suit on a rapid basis.

How are online doctor consultations and prescriptions services possible?

Online doctor consultations and prescriptions, also known as telemedicine, are possible with the continuing spread of information technology. With the encompassing network that the Internet provides, it is easier than ever to connect people with hardware and even wirelessly through buildings, linking communities and countries worldwide.

Before websites offered online doctor consultations and prescriptions, people had to travel to a doctor’s office, or have a doctor come to them to obtain any kind of medical treatment or health information. With the increasing costs of healthcare, diagnosing illness alone is expensive and time consuming, not to mention the high cost of treatment. The American Medical Association has stated that 70% of doctor’s visits are informational in purpose only, and could easily be handled over the Internet or phone. Contributing to this is the fact that patients’ personal health information can be obtained, transmitted and stored digitally.

How Does Telemedicine Work for Me?

There are numerous telemedicine services that provide an array of comprehensive services, which include online medical consultations, diagnoses, prescriptions, and doctor’s notes for school and the workplace. This makes this service ideal for people who travel for leisure or business, as well as those in transportation industries such as pilots and train operators, students, and people on the go in general. Those who do not have the time to make an appointment, let alone go to the doctor’s office for a small ailment could be easily treated online, for faster relief at their convenience. This service is especially ideal for those with limited or no health insurance, as costs are typically lesser and more predictable.

The Future of Telemedicine

As time goes on, it is a priority in the health industry to make telemedicine, or online doctor consultations more accessible and affordable for personal use at home. Already many accommodations have been made to provide affordable equipment to consumers. Online doctor consultations will be more readily available to the general population as the number of personal computers and mobile phones with Internet access increases globally. Greater access and efficiency of the health care industry will positively influence people’s quality of life.

Prescription medications are an increasingly costly part of everyone’s budget, and in tight economic times, finding ways of reducing prescription drug costs is very attractive.

Sometimes a terrible choice has to be made, one medication over another, prescriptions or food… insanely expensive but still helpful medications that aren’t covered by insurance and may be out of reach.

Here the online health resource WebMD has come up with ten money saving ways to keep those prescription drug costs under control.

1) Consider Generics - Nothing says you must take the name brand medication; often generic drugs are just as effective options. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that heart disease patients often do just as well on the generic form of a medication as they do on the brand name variety.

2) Halving Higher Dose Pills - It’s an extra step on your part, you need to carefully break each tablet, but it can save you money in the long run, especially on medications you must take often. The thing is, both high and low doses of most medications cost the same - so you’re getting the benefit of a quantity pricing. Talk to your doctor about this first to ensure it’s a suitable option for you.

3) Higher Doses Taken Less Often - In some cases, a change in dosing schedule can save you money without impacting treatment. Rather than taking small doses twice a day, ask your doctor about a higher dose taken once daily.

4) Switching From Combo Medications - Separate pills can sometimes be less costly than the combination medications, so talk to your doctor if you’re having trouble paying for the medication. You may be surprised by the options open to you.

5) Shopping For The Best Prices - The cost of prescription drugs can vary from store to store, and are sometimes cheaper if you order by mail or online. Don’t be shy about asking for prices; just as you would any other item you buy. All chain drug stores are selling the same medications - it’s up to you how much you’ll pay in profits to the drug store.

6) Investigating Drug Company Assistance Programs - If you meet certain financial criteria, you may qualify for assistance from a drug manufacturer. There will probably be paperwork and phone calls, but the savings can make the effort well worth it.

7) Looking At Medicare Part D - if you’re 65 or older, or have Medicare as the result of a disability, you can change plans every year from November 15th to December 31st. Don’t do this without some investigation… talk with your pharmacist and take a look at your current plan to see if it’s still meeting your needs, if not, plan for a change.

8) Storing Medications Correctly - Heat, moisture and darkness can affect the potency of a medication, which means don’t store your medications in the bathroom medicine cabinet. After spending so much to get a particular drug, you won’t want to find it impossible to take because of damage due to how it may have been stored.

9) Don’t Save Medications - Once your condition improves the temptation is to stop taking it and keep the rest around for the future - don’t! This can be dangerous, and end up hurting your health (far more costly than the few dollars) in the long run. Finish your prescribed medication (especially those antibiotics) and go back to the doctor if you feel ill again.

10) Beware Expensive Drug Promotions - Especially those one-time deals. Remember, the incredible deal you get as part of a promotion won’t be there when it’s time to refill the prescription. In the long run, you’ll pay more for the same drug.

It’s important to keep in mind that your doctor and pharmacist are here to help you find a prescription drug that you can afford and that will help your symptoms best. Work with them. Confide financial struggles and see what can be done for reducing prescription drug costs - after all, if you don’t ask, no one can help and things won’t get easier.

Save on Prescription Drugs

If you find that your prescriptions are drawing down your budget too much, you could be tempted to do without the medicine. Before you decide to risk your health and welfare by doing that, consider the following steps which might allow you to continue the medicine at a reduced cost:

1. Buy from a mail-order pharmacy that allows bulk orders. This is especially helpful for long-term medicines that you will take for 3 months or more.

2. When your doctor is writing a prescription, ask if there is either a generic or a cheaper drug that will still work for you. Sometimes older drugs are less expensive and still as effective.

3. Ask your doctor if they can prescribe a stronger dosage of the medicine which you could then cut in half. You can split a pill into two…this means you get twice the medicine out of one prescription dispensed by the pharmacy. That saves you on dispensing fees, and refills.

4. Check with a variety of pharmacies to find out what they charge. There can be a wide range of prices from one to another.

5. Buy the drugs from a pharmacy online. Make sure it is properly licensed. Look for a VIPPS seal to know that it is a reputable, licensed online pharmacy, or check with www.nabp.net (National Association of Boards of Pharmacy).

6. Check to see if you could possibly be qualified for an assistance program. There are some programs that check your income, but even the drug companies themselves will offer assistance to some individuals. They each have their own criteria, so be sure to contact the manufacturer of your prescription to find out what they offer.

Lastly, avoid the discount cards that you see so prominently offered. They frequently are too restrictive, such as prohibiting buying generics, or restricting your purchases from online pharmacies or pharmacies not associated with the offering company.

Facts You Must Know About Medications Online

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on December 27th, 2010

With the slow economy and many people now having to live on restricted budgets several people are turning to the internet for purchasing their medication and prescription drugs to try to save money. While it is true that there are some legitimate online pharmacies that you can purchase your medications from, there are some facts you must know about medications online and some things you should watch out for if you are purchasing your medicine online or considering it.

To begin with you should always remember that you usually do get what you pay for. This includes purchasing your medication online. While some sites may promise you that you can get your prescription at a very percentage of what you would normally pay at your local pharmacy you should know that you may pay for it in other ways including your health. There are many online pharmacies that claim to sell name brand prescriptions for a small amount and yet when you receive the medication you will find that it is not the name brand or even the type of medication you need at all. You also run the risk of getting the incorrect dosage which can be lethal for some. If you get too much of certain medications you can run the risk of seizures, heart problems and much more.
Another thing to consider about purchasing your medications online is that you do not know what they are putting in your medication. You would run the risk of putting dangerous chemicals and materials in your body just to save some money.

You should also keep in mind if you are considering purchasing your medications online that some of the online drug stores do not follow the law and you could be putting yourself at risk. There are some online pharmacies that do not require a prescription for certain medications that normal pharmacies would require one for. This also puts you at risk because while you may think you are doing yourself a favor by getting medications that sound harmless, you have no idea how your body will react. Your doctor knows which medications are right for you and will give you a prescription if they think you really need it.
Besides this you may find that the online pharmacy you are shopping at is not licensed and therefore not really a pharmacy at all. This could endanger you because they will give you the wrong information on the medication you are purchasing as well as the wrong dosage information.
One problem that some people have come across when looking to purchase medications online is that the so-called pharmacy did not protect their information and their credit card information was given out and they fell victims to identity theft.

While there are many things to look for if you are considering purchasing your medications online there are some legitimate pharmacies get you your medication and save you some money. To find a legitimate online pharmacy you should first check them out with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy to make sure they are licensed. Next make sure that they require a prescription from your doctor. You will also want to make sure that the online pharmacy you are considering has a USA address or a Canadian address. Some online pharmacies claim to be located in America but really all they have is a P.O. Box with an American address. You can also do some research on the company you are considering online. This is a great way to see if other customers have posted reviews and what they have to say about the pharmacy.
In conclusion, as long as you are careful and do your research you can save yourself some money and get the medications you need safely and easily!

Stocking Up on Prescription Medications

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on June 09th, 2010

I consider myself lucky that I have no major health problems and no recurring need of prescription medications, but a lot of people aren’t so fortunate. They need certain medications, everyday or face harmful health effects or even death.

Having a supply of prescription medications on hand post collapse could mean the difference between survival or being another number added to the death toll.

Getting more than a 30 day supply, at least in the U.S., can be difficult if not impossible. To many druggies, peddlers and riffraff, you know the whole drug war thing.

So how do you stock up on prescription medical supplies? How do you get enough on hand to see you though an extended emergency, one that could last for months or even years?

Even if you have a sympathetic doctor that you can talk into writing an extended prescription, getting around the insurance company’s “three month limit” policy can be an insurmountable roadblock.

I know some people that have taken the prescription card (or copies) to multiple pharmacies to obtain extra medications, only to get caught when the insurance company refused to pay for the multiple prescriptions.

The only way to make this work would be to pay for the extra medications entirely out of your own pocket. This could get expensive rather quickly, but if you are determined and have the cash this remains an option. Just don’t be surprised when you are looking through the wrong side of a jail cell, can’t say I didn’t warn you. So don’t come to me all teary-eyed and sobbing.

Some countries such as India, Egypt, Turkey and Mexico have a reputation for a fairly relaxed attitude toward prescription drugs. If you travel to these areas picking up what you need could be as simple as asking. I have never done this myself, but have heard of people pulling it off, and it is perfectly legal if done right.

Others have had good luck ordering non narcotic type drugs from on line sources such as Pharmacy International and others.

I am by no means the final word on this, do a little research of your own. Find out about laws and other potential pitfalls. Remember a screw up here could lead to an unwanted date with Bubba, his can of Vaseline and the confines of a prison cell.

Peter Gets the Rx Help He Needs

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on October 16th, 2009

Are you or someone you know struggling to pay for prescription medicine? If so, you may be able to identify with Peter. Pete is a retired mechanic who suffers from COPD. The majority of his income is supplied by Social Security. He also receives a small monthly pension from the factory he retired from. Pete manages to pay the rent on his tiny apartment, and pay his other bills, but he can’t afford all of the prescriptions he needs to control his condition. Medicare helps Peter out by paying for a part of his medical bills, but his Medicare Part D only pays for his prescriptions until April of each year which is when he falls into that not so sweet donut hole where nothing is covered. Up until he retired, Peter managed to keep a modest savings account in the bank. Since he’s retired, though, he’s been using his savings to buy his prescriptions every month. And now, his account is just about exhausted.

What Pete probably doesn’t know, is that he could be eligible to receive his prescription drugs directly from the manufacturers for free. The manufacturers that offer patient assistance programs are just beginning to advertise that this help is available. Most of the major drug manufacturers including Pfizer, Merck, GlaxoSmithKline , Parke-Davis, Novartis, Wyeth, and nearly a hundred more offer an array of over a thousand free prescription drugs for those who qualify. The pharmaceutical companies decide if they will have a PAP and, if they do, which of their medicines will be available through the program. Some include many or all of the medicines they manufacture while others include only a few. The reasons for these decisions are not something they reveal. Sometimes a medicine or a certain dosage of that medicine will be on a program, then off, and then back on again. Or one dose of the medicine will be on the program but a different dose won’t be.

Although no two programs are exactly the same, most require that the applicant complete an application form. The amount of information required varies. Some programs require detailed medical and financial information, others very little. All require a doctor’s signature. Some patients need drugs for a long time. Most, but not all, programs that cover medicines used to treat chronic diseases offer refills. As you can imagine, this process can at times be very daunting and even overwhelming. Peter was fortunate because he was referred to a prescription assistance company by his physician and was able to receive most of his medicine directly from the drug companies for a small monthly service fee. If you or someone you know are struggling to pay for prescription medicine, I urge you to apply for assistance today. If you qualify, you can get your drugs free from one or more of the assistance programs.

If you have health insurance, your plan may or may not pay for prescription medicine. It depends on what kind of insurance you have. For example, if you have private health insurance through your employer, some or all of the cost of your medicine may be covered. If you have the traditional Medicare plan (sometimes called fee-for-service), your medicine probably isn’t covered. If you have a Medicare managed care plan, some of the cost of your medicine is probably covered. In many cases, the Medicaid plan in your state covers the cost of prescription medicines.

Some state governments offer affordable medicine programs for seniors, people who are disabled and people who have low incomes. Community health centers, Area Agencies on Aging, free health clinics and other community programs may also offer help. To use these services, you may need to show that you don’t qualify for private health insurance or that you don’t make enough money to pay for your medicine.

If you or someone you know are struggling to pay for prescription medicine, there is help available, you just need to be creative and persistent in finding it.

Prescription drugs have long been the fastest growing cost component of our healthcare system, which likely means they have also been a fast-growing component of a family or individual’s personal budget. With a few consumer-friendly developments in recent years, patients are in a better position to take control of their prescription drug expenses, even if they have recurring or chronic conditions which require long-term drug therapy.

Using generics instead of brand name drugs has long been an option for many, but with steadily increasing prices of insurance premiums and medical care, finding ways to shave money off of prescription costs is becoming more important as people review their budget situations. The typical generic costs anywhere from 25% to 60% of its brand name equivalent, and with the trend for discounted generics at large chains, such as the $4 drug program offered by Target, Costco, Walmart, and others, most consumers have realistic options to save money on pharmaceuticals by researching the generic market. While the ability to substitute generics for brand name drugs once a prescription exists varies from state-to-state - pharmacists have more latitude in some states than in others to determine how they fill a prescription - the best thing to do is talk with a doctor about the possible prescription options. Most physicians are well aware of the common generic substitutes, and for the less common ones can easily find if there are generic options through online or reference tools. To take advantage of the hundreds of prescription drugs offered for discounted prices by major chains, make these three steps habit when evaluating and purchasing prescriptions:

  1. Talk to your doctor about low-cost alternatives. Many physicians assume that their patients want the lowest-cost alternative medications, but some do not. Make sure that it is clear to your physician that cost is a factor in your ability to be compliant with his or her medical orders. Knowing that you are interested in less-expensive drug therapy will help them think in a more cost-conscious manner on your behalf.
  2. Research prescription options. In cases where you or a family member takes medication for a chronic condition, or has recently been given a prescription for a brand-name drug, doing some digging can ensure that the best drug option is being used. The official Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prescription drug crosswalk is called the Orange Book, and lists all approved generic alternatives for any brand name drug.
  3. Find discounted generic prescription drug offerings. Most major pharmacy and many grocery chains are offering a consumer-friendly discount generic drug list, often selling common generic medications for $4 per month. As generics often save you significantly off of brand-name drug prices, this can be an area of significant medical cost savings for individuals who regularly take medications. The great news is that 2008 and 2009 have been banner years for patent expirations on drugs, making more medications available in generic form than ever before. Other vendors fill prescriptions directly online for pricing that may be comparable to some local pharmacies, and may be worth considering as well.

By being a savvy prescription drug shopper, you may be able to save 50% or more from your family’s monthly prescription drug bill. For those with routine sickness or chronic conditions, that kind of savings month-after-month can add up and is worth making a personal financial planning and budgeting priority.

Many Americans currently take more then one prescription drug on a daily basis! If you are one of the many that do, are you paying too much for your meds? You may or may not know the answer to that question, but I assure you that if you think that these costs are out of hand, you are not alone. And guess what, from my experience, if these costs are a bit high in your opinion, there are some options.

First of all, are there alternatives to insurance plans? The answer to that question is YES!. Secondly, can you beat out high costs on those prescription drugs by going the generic route? YES! Are the generic versions of those name brand name pills that you are taking going to be just as potent and more cost effective? YES! The generic brands are put though the same rigorous standards as their counter part name brand pills. On top of that, name brand pills haven’t been on the market very long. Why does that matter? Well, the generic drugs have usually been on the market longer then the brand name prescriptions and have proven to be very helpful and good drugs. Name brand drugs that are approved by the FDA might still have some very bad side effects! This information usually takes time to find out, mean while you are forced to pay the high premium with that name brand pills.

Think about your future and what you will be spending on prescriptions. Firstly, if you were to shop around when you’re buying those prescriptions, usually this will prove to benefit you and your family right off the bat weather you’re paying for name brand or generic drugs. Try comparing prices on-line and in your local drug stores including supermarkets and department stores. You might be very surprised at what you can save that way. Secondly, Patient assistance programs or prescription advocacy programs have been around for years, these types of programs were designed to help those that are in a lower income bracket. Families do have to qualify and meet certain requirements that generally are 2 times the Federal poverty level. Rest assured though that these types of programs could prove to help you or your family out enormously.

In regards to the future we must continue to look forward to what the prescription drugs of tomorrow will cost and how we can afford them. Now if your one of the many insured or non-insured that feels like your insurance and their Rx plan is just not enough, or your sick of the out of pocket cost, then try looking into a discount health plan with a prescription drug discount! Even with insurance you may not have the best medical coverage but, if you look into companies like Ameriplan USA that offers programs which include prescription drug benefits, you will find out that by making the decision to Join Ameriplan that your family could be saving up to 50% or more on those prescription drugs. On top of that you might want to look into their mail order maintenance medication program which could save you even more money.

Sadly as we get older a lot of us are dependent on these prescription drugs, and if you’re like everyone else you don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for them. Well, with a little work, and I do mean very little work, the savings are out there and the companies that are offering great benefits and discount are there and designed to help you and your family. You’ve worked hard for your money, so don’t give up the good fight and put those high prescription drug costs where they belong, out of your life.
