Drug Interactions With Most Common Alcoholism Treatment Medications

Since antabuse is a prescribed drug, your doctor or pharmacist should already be aware of any possible drug interactions you may experience, and may be monitoring them for you. It is important that you do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine while on antabuse treatment, before consulting with your doctor. Also, if you are to going to have a surgery of any sort, be sure to clarify with your doctor that you are taking antabuse.
Antabuse must not be used with the following drugs because of very serious drug interactions that may happen: any alcohol-containing products (cough and cold medicines, aftershave, lotions, perfume, etc.), amprenavir oral solution (protease inhibitor used in HIV infection treatment), metronidazole (medication commonly used in the treatment of infections initiated by susceptible organisms).
Before you start taking antabuse, inform your doctor if you are using any of the medications listed above.
Before using antabuse, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescribed and nonprescriptional/herbal products you use, especially of: amitriptyline, any “blood thinning” drugs (warfarin), certain seizure medications (phenytoin or fosphenytoin), theophylline, isoniazid.
Antabuse can increase the side effects of caffeine. Try to avoid drinking large amounts of beverages containing caffeine (tea, coffee, colas) or eating alot of chocolate.
Antabuse may cause certain laboratory test to have false results (tests like urine VMA/HVA tests). Make sure that lab personnel and your doctors know that you use antabuse pills.
Listed here are not all possible drug interactions, therefore, before using antabuse, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all products and medications/drugs you use. Compose a list of all your medications, and be sure to share it with your doctor.
