How Dangerous can products containing Aspirin really be?

Reye’s Syndrome (aka Reye - Johnson Syndrome) is a commonly fatal disease and like most diseases and conditions, early diagnosis and treatment is critically important. This disease primarily affects children, but there have been cases even including young adults.

As a busy parent, being aware of this disease and the symptoms is very important.

Although the first clinical documentation on Reye’s Syndrome started surfacing in the early 1960’s this is a disease that has probably been around for a long time.

Nobody knows why, but when children (and even adults) take aspirin substances when they have a viral infection like the Flu, Cold or Chicken Pox they are creating the environment for the development and onset of Reye’s Syndrome.

This is one of those fatal diseases that is probably 99% avoidable. Do not take or give anyone an aspirin based product within 90 days of having any type of viral infection.

Our bodies are fighting off virus’ daily so not administering aspirin to your child at all may be one of the best things you can do.

Aspirin vs Acetaminophen

Short and Sweet. Aspirin reduces swelling; Acetaminophen reduces body temperature / fever.

If fever is a concern, then use some form of a product with Acetaminophen. Aspirin will not help with the fever anyway.

Warning: Be aware that many “over the counter” products are a “blend” of ingredients that may include Aspirin. Take the time to look at the label for any word that contains anything like “Salix, Salicylate or a derivative of the word).
