Breast Implants and Capsular Contracture
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on September 25th, 2010
There are concerns about breast augmentation that all patients must understand before undergoing the surgery. When a patient chooses breast augmentation, she should understand that not all procedures and techniques bring incredible results.
In many cases, patients who have breast implants for augmentation encounter difficulties with their breasts. The most common difficulty is called capsular contracture. This happens when the body tries to encapsulate the foreign objects inside the breasts, i.e., the implants.
When this complication occurs, patients will feel that the breast is not soft and doesn’t feel natural. When you touch breasts that have this problem, you can feel the capsular contracture. Therefore, surgical removal is recommended for patients who have this problem.
There are ways to avoid capsular contracture:
1.You have to choose the procedure wisely. Talk to your doctor. It’s not always the price that you should consider; it’s about the result. If the implants are done under the sub-muscular layer, capsular contracture is less likely to occur. If you choose to have the implants done under the sub-granular layer, you need to know you might have capsular contracture.
2.You have to choose the right texture of the implants. There are two main texture types of implants. The smooth-textured implants are more likely to produce capsular contracture than are those with the rough texture.
3.Massage your breasts correctly and routinely. The doctor will teach you how to massage your breasts. You should do this regularly. Otherwise, your breasts are more likely to have capsular contracture.
The recovery process is also essential. Following the surgery, you must continue to massage your breasts for at least 3 to 6 months to prevent capsular contracture.
When a patient has capsular contracture from breast augmentation, revision surgery has to be performed to remove the contracture inside the breast. The purpose is to remove or break up problematic tissue. In some cases, the patient needs to have a secondary breast surgery for permanent implant removal.
There are two types of surgery procedures to remove the capsular contracture:
1.Capsulectomy
This procedure is a full implant capsule removal. The surgeon performs this procedure by entering the inside of the breast and removes the problematic tissue. The capsule is commonly removed whole to prevent it from recurrence. This procedure gives the patient a great result, and it’s a better way to resolve capsular contracture.
2.Closed Capsulotomy
This is a non-surgical procedure. To perform this procedure, the surgeon will break up the capsule that surrounds the implant shell by squeezing the implant and surrounding breast tissue. This procedure is dangerous and not commonly used to solve the problem. This is a painful procedure and the patients can lose the breast sensitivity.
Comparing the both procedures it is clearly that capsulectomy is recommended. Even though capsulectomy is more expensive, the results are worth the price and all effort.
Patients should be informed that following this surgery, the shapes of the breasts may not return to their original states. This is because the capsular contracture changes the shapes of the breasts, and removing the implants will not return breasts to their original condition.
Is Stretch Marks Related to Puberty?
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on October 26th, 2009
Stretch marks mostly appear at the time of puberty to both boys and girls. Most of them start dealing with stretch marks at this time. This always makes them frustrating. At this age, one may always feel that he or she is left all alone to this problem. But, in fact, they are not alone. Puberty often leads to those ugly looking stretch marks for both boys and girls. Stretch marks usually appear when we gaining or losing weight rapidly. Most of the boys and girls start gaining weight quickly at the time of puberty and this can develop stretch marks easily.
Our skin is designed to stretch but over stretching can be trouble and can always lead to scars and stretch marks. So, if at any stage you start noticing some marks, you need to understand that you are certainly not the only one who is going through this problem. But, one may notice that women are more likely to develop stretch marks when comparing to men. And, the fact is women are certainly taking serious to deal with these stretch marks when comparing to men.
Stretch marks mostly appear on our stomach, thighs, under arms, breasts and buttocks. But sometimes they might appear upper parts of our body. But puberty is definitely not the only reason that can cause these stretch marks. There can be a number of other reasons too. Gaining weight rapidly, body building and losing weight are some of the most common factors that might cause stretch marks. It is also very common to develop these marks at the time of pregnancy.
These marks may appear red at the beginning and later on fade to lighter color like purple. They would just fade out over time and leaving a thin line. Some might hardly be able to notice. No matter what kind of color they are, for sure you would not feel uncomfortable while doing sun bathing with your friends.
It is not a good way to reduce stretch mark by sun tanning. A regular tanning practice would not fade these stretch marks completely. You can also try the tanning lotion, but that may not work on the parts that are covered with swimmming suit. And, you must remember to apply sun block when you doing sun tanning. Over tanning under the sun will cause skin cancer. Another option, you can wear a swimming suit that would certainly cover most of your body hiding your stretch marks.
Why am I suggesting you to cover your stretch mark with swimming suit? It is because you may never get rid of these stretch marks just in a day. But, you can easily prevent them from being seen by others. If you want to get rid of these marks, it may certainly be time consuming. You could try using various creams that are effective on these stretch marks. As these stretch marks are in the dermis layer so it is not possible to treat them overnight.
Both boys and girls may develop these marks at the time of puberty. But it is more important how we deal with it.
