Is Oil Good For Hair?
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 14th, 2009
People who have ‘greasy’ hair often blame over-active sebaceous glands for overproducing such a ‘useless’ compound. Oil is continually demonized in shampoo commercials, and people seem to be convinced nowadays that oily hair is the worst thing that can happen to hair. Is this true, or not? Let’s examine the facts.
Why is there Oil?
We all know that oil is a natural product of the human body. No, it’s not a byproduct it’s actually a first-order product of specific glands in the human skin. So why do we need oil? First off, oil is important because it forms a protective barrier around the skin, nails and hair.
Without oil, the human skin would shrivel up, flake and erode horribly. The nails would also dry up and lose their natural suppleness. Oil allows the skin to glow, and to remain soft and cool even if the sun is beating down mercilessly in summer. Oil also helps block out the harmful rays of the sun.
Why Does Hair Need Oil?
If we take off from the logic stated above, then hair requires oil as much as skin and nails. Since hair is mostly dead hair cells, it would need the protection of natural oils to keep it looking lively and shiny. Imagine hair without oil: it would look like it had been blow dried for several hours without end.
Sebum is not the enemy. Sebum is your natural defense against the harsh, polluted environment. However, when sebum mixes with other undesirable elements like dirt, pollen and smoke the formula changes. Sebum can become undesirable when it becomes a medium for germs and other potentially damaging pathogens.
How to Remove Oil from Hair?
There’s no way to really remove the oil from your hair. If you have very, very short hair and you find that the extra oil is making you look like a greasy grill; you simply have to wash your hair more often. By washing your hair more, you would be able to control the amount of sebum that is spreading across your hair.
Most adolescents have this exact problem, and usually, monikers like “greasy haired girl” emerge right about this time. While the monikers are often harsh and baseless, kids simply have to contend with the fact that this is simply a biological phase that would eventually pass.
Drugs for Less Oil
With all the hoopla that had emerged regarding excessive amounts of oil in the scalp, drugs have been developed to counter the production of sebum. Those who are really suffering from excessive production usually go to general practitioners to get hold of these medicines.
It should be noted that not everyone requires such drastic measures, and such measures are only put in place if the excessive oil is causing too many inter-related skin problems. Acne sufferers or those with rosacea are among those that benefit to a certain degree from anti-oil drugs.
However, for the rest of the population, better leave your sebaceous glands alone. It’s very possible that the excessive production of oil is a non-permanent phase, and it too, will pass.
Male Breast Reduction Helps Men With Gynecomastia
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 13th, 2009
While breast implant and enhancement surgeries are gaining popularity with women all over the world, men are also becoming more interested in having breast surgery performed. Yet, men are looking for the opposite effect - they want a breast reduction.
It may surprise you to learn that many men suffer from a condition known as gynecomastia, or an enlargement of the breasts. Some experts estimate that this affects as many as 40 to 60 percent of men at some time during their lives, with most episodes occurring during puberty and adolescence.
Most boys see this condition disappear after just a few months, but for some the deformity sticks around. For obvious reasons, this can be very embarrassing. It can make men very uncomfortable going shirtless at the beach or the pool or even in intimate relations. Self-confidence often suffers as a result of gynecomastia, which makes breast reduction by a competent, qualified plastic surgeon an excellent option.
What Causes Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is not necessarily related to being overweight with extra fat around the mammaries, although that can be the cause. It is actually a condition that is often the result of hormonal imbalances. Yet there are a lot of other causes as well. These include the use and abuse of steroids, the growth of tumors in the tissue, chronic liver disease, syndromes like Gilbert’s and Klinefelter, castration and certain genetic disorders.
Gynecomastia can also result as a side effect of many medications, especially drugs that either increase estrogen or reduce testosterone levels in the body. Things like tricylyc antidepressants, marijuana, alcohol, and heroin have been known to cause this condition in some males as well.
If the problem stems from the use of medicine or drug abuse or obesity, changes in medication or other lifestyle alterations may be the solution but in all other situations plastic surgery is the only way to correct the problem.
What Does Breast Reduction Surgery Involve?
The preparations for this surgery will include finding a good plastic surgeon, providing him or her with a full medical history. Sometimes the plastic surgeon will require breast X-rays to be taken to get the best picture of the underlying fat and tissue positioning.
Gynecomastia patients going in for surgery should be relatively healthy, mentally stable individuals, and it usually a requirement that patients quit smoking at least two weeks before the operation.
The procedure is performed as the plastic surgeon makes a discreet incision around the areola or in the arm pit. The surgeon then uses a liposuction cannula to remove the excess fatty tissues, after which the patient is sewn back up, sometimes with a small drain left in the incision to allow excess fluids to escape in the next few days.
After the operation, the plastic surgeon will bandage the incision and wrap the chest tightly in some dressings to help with the healing process. The first few days post-surgery for gynecomastia patients will usually involve some bruising, swelling, and pain, but these can be managed with ice packs and prescribed pain medication.
After the recovery, breast reduction patients experience great satisfaction and often a restoration of self confidence as they no longer have to worry about embarrassingly large breasts!
The Backers and Detractors of Alternative Medicine
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 13th, 2009
The term “alternative medicine” is becoming a common by word nowadays. By alternative medicine, we mean the use of certain methods and practices for treatment other than conventional methods of treatments such as surgery and medications.Chinese medicine and the Ayurveda medical practice in India are considered as alternative medicine in Western cultures, while it is considered as conventional in those places where they originated from. Thus, alternative therapies are also largely a matter of social and cultural context. Most of the time, alternative medicine goes with a religious or spiritual element, but in some cases, this spiritual ingredient is not necessitated as alternative practices sometimes merely invoke self-awareness to tune in with the body coupled with natural supplementation.
Alternative medicine is differentiated from complementary medicine in that the latter, as the name suggests is complementing an alternative practice method with conventional treatment practices. Exclusively resorting to alternative treatments and completely supplanting conventional medicine – this is the real essence of alternative medicine. Some people make complementary medicine a recourse and the combination of the utilization of both alternative and conventional methods depends not only on a person’s illness but on his personal beliefs as well. To have a surefire, well-rounded treatment, majority of individuals use complementary medicine when either conventional treatment or alternative therapies are ineffective on their own.
A large proportion of doctors are currently utilizing alternative health techniques with conventional practices. In the last decade, there has been an increase in the percentage of individuals who resorted to alternative treatments from 33.8% to 42.1% in the US.Alternative practices are widely gaining acceptance in the Western world although conventional methods of treatment are the most widespread in these cultures. In fact, as of date, 60% of medical schools in the United States have included courses in alternative methods as a scope of getting an MD degree. The number of universities offering courses and even degrees in alternative medicine are on the rise.
A whooping 85% of nursing schools include the same in their curriculum.Reputable medical schools now include numerous alternative medicine courses in their curriculum. This instigated the expansive acceptance of alternative methods of treatment in Western cultures. However, there are some critics that denounce the effectiveness of alternative medicine. Presumably due to the fact that researches and studies have not proven the effectiveness of alternative therapies, these critics doubt the credibility of this technique. After all, by definition, isn’t it just an “alternative”? It should have been considered as another form of conventional treatment if alternative medicine was proven effective. As the practice of alternative medicine is significantly dependent on an individual’s eliciting body changes through self awareness, it is difficult to gauge the success of alternative treatments.
A person’s level of self-awareness is a highly subjective matter and would be exigent to measure objectively. Furthermore, there are presumptions that the positive results of alternative medicine may be attributed to the placebo effect or natural healing. It is however inarguable that alternative medicine methods are safe as long as properly employed. If the person remains under the care of a conventional medicine practitioner, alternative therapy is unlikely to be consequential and may even be the way to a speedy recovery.
5 Steps For Performing Hot Stone Therapy
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 12th, 2009
“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” That is an observation that Lao Tzu, the Chinese philosopher and founder of Taoism, made. The essence of this expression is that starting a task is a major part of completing it. Fortunately, performing hot stone therapy does not require 1,000 steps. However, it DOES involve some major steps that the therapist should take in a sequential order. Here is the basic protocol:
1. Prepare the client
First, drape the patient by using a method that makes him or her comfortable. It is important to communicate with the patient, to ensure that he or she is comfortable during the entire process.
2. Prepare the stones
Therapists typically use a set of basalt stones, which originate from a volcano. The stones vary in size: large, medium and small. Usually therapists use special machines built specifically for hot stones, to heat the stones. You can add scents to the water, to give the stones a certain aroma. Make sure to sanitize the stones, to ensure that the bacteria are destroyed.
3. Place the stones on the patient’s body
You should place the largest stones on the largest parts of the body, such as the shoulders and hips. The next step is to place medium-sized stones on places such as either side of the spine. Finally, you should place the tiniest stones in areas such as between fingers and toes.
It is important to handle the stone carefully. They are quite hot, so use tongs to keep them safe. Wipe the stones on a towel before placing them on the patient’s bodies, so they do not slide. Also, communicate with the patient while placing the stones on the body. If he or she reveals that they are too hot, then you may need to let them cool for a while. Then you can place them on the patient’s body.
4. Remove the stones
After about 20 minutes, you should remove the stones from the patient’s body. It is best to begin with the heaviest stones, and then move onto the smaller stones. Continue communicating with the patient, to ensure that he or she is comfortable. If you see some redness on the patient’s skin, have no fear! This is simply a sign that the patient’s skin has absorbed some of the stone’s heat. It will not leave a permanent mark.
5. Perform the massage using a certain method
After removing the stones, you can use a particular massage style, such as Swedish or Shiatsu. It is important to massage the body soon after removing the heated stones. This is because the muscles are still supple, making the massage more effective.
When performing a hot stone massage, it is important to conduct the activity by using a careful step-by-step process. This will ensure that the patient remains safe and relaxed. A hot stone massage may not include 1,000 steps, but the first one, the last one, and all of the ones in between—are equally important!
Tummy Tuck: What It Will And Won’t Do For You
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 12th, 2009
Saggy skin in the abdominal area can result from many things- pregnancy, extreme weight gain and the loss and simply the loss of elasticity as you age. Whatever the reason, you’ve got loose skin draping over your waistband and you hate it. You can’t wear the size clothes you should and forget about going to the beach or pool.
A tummy tuck can help you with your problem. A tummy tuck can do a lot of things for you, but there are some things it can’t do. If you are thinking about having this procedure, you need to have realistic expectations. Here’s what you need to know:
A tummy tuck can…
1. Remove excess skin. In the case of pregnancy and weight gain, the skin gets stretched to its limits. After the baby is born or the weight is lost, the skin may not bounce back to normal. This is particularly true after multiple pregnancies or extreme weight gain and prolonged weight gain. This cosmetic procedure makes an incision in the pelvic region and the excess skin is cut away. The remaining skin is pulled taut, flattening the area and showing off your abdominals.
2. Restores muscle strength. While the incision is open, your surgeon can also pull your abdominal muscles together and strengthen them for better control. This is especially important after pregnancy because the muscles are stretched to their limits along with the skin. Strengthening the muscles also gives a more shapely contoured abdominal area.
3. Improve self-esteem. You will feel better about your body once the sagging skin is removed. Your clothes will fit better and you won’t be self-conscious in a bikini or with your shirt off. Intimacy may even improve because you are more confident in your skin and like the way you look.
It cannot…
1. Substitute for diet and exercise. A tummy tuck should be the last step in your weight loss process. Even if liposuction is used at the same time, it is only to remove the stubborn fat that you couldn’t lose. You should be at the weight you want before having this procedure.
2. Last forever. Yes, the results are permanent… at least until age starts catching up with you again. But, for the results to last you have to take care of yourself. Prior to the surgery, make sure you are at the weight you want to be and have maintained it for awhile and that you are done having children. If you can’t guarantee this, wait on the procedure. After the excess skin is removed, anything that stretches the area can create even bigger problems as well as ugly stretch marks. As you age, you will lose elasticity, but that will much further down the road.
Once you know you are ready for a tummy tuck, now you have to find the right surgeon. Make sure he is board certified and licensed in plastic surgery and has experience with this procedure. During your consultation, be clear about your expectations but also take your surgeon’s advice into consideration. He will evaluate your body and your health to make sure you are ready to proceed.

Chiropractic Care: History and Origin
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 11th, 2009
Most people would probably think that the chiropractic field is a relatively new method of health treatment compared with conventional medicine. Very few know the actual history of chiropractic, but the truth is that it began long ago and has been successful in improving patients’ ailments for thousands of years.
Definition of Chiropractic Care
The term chiropractic comes from the Greek “chiro” meaning hand, and “practic” referring to practice or operation. And in its early days and still today much of chiropractic care involves “hand treatments” to manipulate the spine back into its proper position.
Chiropractors focus on the connection between the alignment of the spine and the functioning of the surrounding muscles and nerves. They emphasize the practice of only noninvasive and natural health care methods.
The Ancient Days
Using the hands and other methods to manipulate the spine dates back all the way to ancient China and Greece. During the time period of 2700 B.C. To 1500 B.C., records were made documenting the use of such chiropractic care by physicians of the day.
And later, around 400 B.C., two Greek contemporaries, Hippocrates and Herodutus both employed the practice to cure their patients. In some of his writings, Hippocrates said, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.”
Daniel David Palmer
Little was heard of chiropractic care in the Western world until 1895, when a man named Daniel David Palmer founded the modern chiropractic profession in Iowa. Palmer had been in the business of magnetic healing until September of 1895 when he had an interesting encounter with a janitor at his office.
The janitor had been deaf for several years. He told Mr Palmer that his hearing loss occurred suddenly one day after he had bent down in an awkward position, and heard a “pop” in his back. Palmer felt the man’s back and found a vertebra grossly out of position.
“I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man’s hearing should be restored,” Palmer recorded in his notes.”With this object in view, a half hour’s talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever, and soon the man could hear as before.”
Soon after this “miraculous” success, Palmer took on a new role, as the first American chiropractor, using spinal realignment techniques to improve everything from the flu to migraine headaches to epilepsy to heart problems.
Palmer once said of his discovery, “I am not the first person to replace subluxated vertebrae, but I do claim to be the first person to replace displaced vertebrae by using the spinous and transverse processes as levers… and to develop the philosophy and science of chiropractic adjustments.”
In 1898, he began the Palmer School & Infirmary of Chiropractic to help others take on the role of chiropractor. Since that time, chiropractic care has become one of the largest branches of the medical field with hundreds of new chiropractors graduating each year from accredited colleges and universities.
A Hot Stone Kit Gives the Upper Hand in Treating Lower Back Pain
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 10th, 2009
Levels are part of life. There are building levels and sea levels. There are lasagna levels and cake levels. There are security levels, rock levels, clearance levels, video game levels, and parking garage levels. And if you want to verify that a surface is level, then use a tool called a level. Likewise, when providing a back massage, the two main levels are the upper back and the lower back levels. Here are steps for massaging the lower back:
LOWER BACK
STEP 1: Use a hot stone kit
After heating and sanitizing the stones, place two of the largest stones on either shoulder, and on either hip. Then position mid-size stones on either side of the backbone. After about 20 minutes, remove the stones.
Why use heated stones? The heated stones are somewhat of a “pre-massage.” The heat from the stones warms and invigorates the muscle tissues. This makes the muscles suppler and easier to work with. Hot stones are particularly important for problems such as muscle spasms. Failing to use the hot stones can make the massage more challenging for both the therapist and the patient. Think of the stones as somewhat of a meat tenderizer.
STEP 2: Position yourself alongside the patient’s lower back
Put each hand’s thumb and index finger on either side of the patient’s backbone. One of the hands should be a little bit behind the other one. Make recurring, overlapping actions down the entire back.
STEP 3: Oil the lower back
Begin at the backbone’s base, and then glide upwards. Move along either side of the backbone, to the patient’s ribcage. Then move downwards, along the body’s sides, returning to the backbone’s base.
STEP 4: Use a friction stoke
Create this stroke by using your thumbs. Make tiny, overlapping circular movements over the backbone’s base. Slowly move along the backbone’s sides, towards the patient’s ribcage.
STEP 5: Follow a path along the patient’s body
Move your body’s positioning a little, and then start working on the opposite side of the patient’s body. Create huge sliding circular movements, following this path
• side of the backbone
• around the ribcage
• down the body’s side
• over the rib’s meaty section
• back to the backbone’s side
Next, use large kneading strokes to knead the entire hip region of the patient, slowly.
STEP 6: Use a wringing stroke
Place your palms on a hip of the patient. Then use a wringing stroke upwards, towards the shoulders of the patient. Afterwards, repeat this series on the opposite side of the patient’s body. Finally, alternate your hands as you use a downward stroke along the backbone’s entire length. Repeat this step several times.
While both the upper and lower levels of the back can warrant the need for a back massage, lower back pain can be particularly painful for many people. By following the aforementioned steps, you can treat the lower back, through a lower back massage. These steps will give you the upper hand when battling a patient’s lower back pain!
6 Super Methods For Foot Massages That Include a Hot Stone Kit
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 09th, 2009
We should feel pity for our poor feet. Every day we spend time standing, walking, running, jumping, and sometimes even skipping—on them. Professional athletes who undergo rehabilitation after an injury, often run in water rather than on a track. The reason is that there is no resistance when he or she runs in water, while tons of pressure crash until an athlete’s foot, each time his or her foot hits a pavement. Regardless of why your doggies are tired, here are some effective methods for a foot massage:
1. Ankle Rotations
Use one of your hands to cup underneath the foot’s heel, and behind the ankle. This will help to steady the patient’s foot and leg. Next, use the other hand to grab the ball of the foot. Then turn the foot at the ankle, slowly. Perform this action 3-5 times in both directions. Within time, the tenseness in the foot will begin to drop.
2. Arch Press
Grasp the foot behind the ankle. Use the other hand’s heel to push firmly on the foot. Slide from the ball of the foot, in the direction of the heel. Then return to the starting position. Perform this action five times.
3. Toe Pulls and Squeezes
Hold the foot underneath the arch. Then using the other hand, place your thumb atop the big toe, and the index finger underneath the toe. Begin with the base, and then pull the toe. Glide your fingers to the top of the toe, and then glide it down to the base. Repeat this step, but by using a squeezing method this time. After finishing with the big toe, move onto the other toes of the foot.
4. Stroking
This method helps to increase the blood circulation in the foot, thus warming it up. Use your thumbs to create a firm, slow stroking motion from the ends of the toes, to the ankle. Then by using a lighter stroke, follow the same path towards the ends of the toes. You should perform this stroking step 3-5 times.
5. Toe Slides
Grab the foot behind the patient’s ankle. Meanwhile, cup underneath the heel. Using the other hand’s index finger, place your finger between the toes, and move it backwards and forwards for 3-5 repetitions.
6. A hot stone massage kit
A hot stone massage kit can serve as an excellent way to complement a massage. These kits typically contain a variety of basalt stones, of different sizes. A therapist typically places the smallest stones in various places, such as between toes. As the stones lie there for about 20 minutes, they loosen up the muscles in the toes. Next, the therapist removes the stones, and then begins using particular foot massage techniques.
Considering how much pressure our feet withstand every day, a foot massage can be one of the most relaxing types of massages to give and receive. In fact, it can be as relaxing as a full-body massage. Use a hot stone massage kit to relieve that tension in your toes!
5 Huge Factors That Can Determine the Cost of a Hot Stone Kit Massage
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 09th, 2009
How do you know when the price is right? For instance, if you want to enjoy a hot stone kit massage, is there an objective way to determine if the price is too low or too high? Unfortunately, no universal standard exists for hot stone therapy prices. However, some basic factors can influence the price of massages. Here are some basic factors regarding the various costs of hot stone massages:
1. Public and private massages differ in cost
Home-service massages tend to cost somewhat more than massages in spas. This is logical, considering that home massages are more convenient. Some people feel more comfy receiving a home massage, while others enjoy the escapism that a spa massage can provide. Determine which one would be more convenient and relaxing for you.
2. Prices differ in smaller and larger cities
If you get a massage in a small city day spa, you can expect to pay about $50 for a half-hour massage. Meanwhile, an hour massage would cost you about $75 an hour. However, if you get a massage in a larger city, a one-hour basic massage (i.e. Swedish, Shiatsu, etc.) would cost you approximately $90. Of course, we should expect reasonably higher rates in larger cities, considering the added convenience and higher cost of living involved.
3. The therapist’s knowledge and experience can be a factor
The therapist who conducts the massage can also impact how much your massage costs. For instance, some therapists have received specialized training as an RN, for providing massages. Also, other therapists may have more experience in giving massages—or more experience giving a particular type of massage. Once again, if you want a better therapist, the cost of your massage could be slightly higher.
4. Specialty massages have higher prices
As a rule, the industry classifies massages such as Swedish and Shiatsu, as “basic” massages. Thus, their rates tend to be basic. On the other hand, specialty massages such as hot stone massages and aromatherapy tend to have higher price tags. Again, this makes sense, as the “you get what you pay for” rule applies. Aromatherapy requires various scented products. Meanwhile, hot stone massages are even more involved. A hot stone massage kit is required, while the therapist must spend extra time heating and sanitizing the stones.
5. Massages cost more at spas open 24-7
Expect to pay more for a massage in spas that are open 24-hours a day. However, the added cost is worthwhile, considering the convenience that they provide. Muscle pain and soreness can attack at any time. Thanks to 24-hour spas with therapeutic massages, you can simply get up and go! Remember that you get what you pay for. When you are suffering from muscle spasms, tomorrow cannot wait.
Whenever we want to buy a good or service, the price tag is one of the most important factors. In the case of hot stone massages, several factors can influence the cost of the massage. However, the soothing and relaxing feeling after the massage—is priceless!
