Facial Hyperhidrosis Reduction
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on September 07th, 2010
Facial hyperhidrosis or excessive facial sweating is generally considered as a condition with genetic roots. However, it has been found that some external stimuli could also be responsible for its occurrence. Therefore, while the hereditary factor of this condition remains to be prevalent, other reasons are not totally ruled out.
The condition of excessive sweating on the face often becomes visible when a person gets into the stage of adolescence. A common misconception is that it only happens to people who are obese, but this is not true at all. The reality is, excessive facial sweating can happen to anyone regardless of their age, weight, race, and background, and it could be a very, very embarrassing condition. Some people who suffer from facial hyperhidrosis come to the extent of being paranoid and they avoid any social events or outdoor gatherings just so the public would not witness their sweating. Needless to say, this condition may lead to another condition when not appropriately dealt with– like panic attack or anxiety.
Just when you thought that things could not get worse, it could. Excessive sweating of the face could actually extend to your neck and scalp. Meaning, if you are suffering from it, you have a very good chance of drenching your head, face, and neck with sweat while doing even the lightest of activities. This situation could be worse for women because excessive facial sweating could ruin their make-up.
Unfortunately, facial hyperhidrosis isn’t curable. However, it may relieve you to know that it can be controlled. Basically, controlling can be done by either going through surgery or going through other conventional options.
Perhaps the most popular non-surgical method is by using an antiperspirant. Antiperspirants available in the market contain aluminium chloride mixed with ethyl alcohol. This solution has been found to be significantly effective against hyperhidrosis on the face. Topical antiperspirants have to be left on the skin between 6 and 8 hours. When using one, it is important to make sure that your skin is completely dry before applying it. Otherwise you might experience some skin irritation.
As already mentioned, facial hyperhidrosis can also affect the scalp, thus, it is important to keep your hair at a short length. Wearing your hair long could contribute to greater sweating and your efforts in controlling the symptoms may be in vain.
Nowadays, some doctors are exploring another form of treatment for the condition like Botox injection. This kind of injection has already been proven successful in treating underarm sweating. However, it also has its disadvantage. For one, it has still not yet been approved as a treatment for any other type of hyperhidrosis. Two, it could also be quite painful— physically and on the pocket.
Other natural methods of controlling facial hyperhidrosis are still being explored these days. As surgery is commonly an expensive and a frightening way of relieving any symptoms, experts are trying to find natural ways to alleviate them. If you are suffering from excessive facial sweating or any other form of hyperhidrosis, it is most important to seek medical attention especially if it is already affecting your daily life. This way, you’ll know your best options.
