Hydro Nephrosis Homeopathic Approach
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on August 31st, 2010
Hydronephrosis is distension and dilation of the renal pelvis and calyces caused by obstruction of free flow of urine from the kidney, leading to progressive atrophy of the kidney.
Hydronephrosis may be unilateral involving just one kidney or bilateral involving both.
A complication of hydronephrosis is decreased kidney function.
The increased pressure of extra fluid within the kidney decreases the blood filtration rate and may cause structural damage to kidney cells.
This decrease in function is reversible if the underlying condition is corrected but if the hydronephrosis lasts many weeks, the damage may be permanent.
Causes:
There are numerous causes of hydronephrosis that are categorized based on whether the cause is intrinsic (located within the urinary collecting system) or extrinsic (outside of the collecting system).
Examples of Intrinsic Causes of Hydronephrosis
Ureter
•Kidney stone: causes obstruction of the ureter as it moves from the kidney into the bladder via ureter so, urine will back up and cause the kidney to swell.
•Stricture or scarring
Bladder
•Bladder stones
•Cystocele
•Bladder neck contracture
Urethra
•The inability to empty the bladder for any reason may cause bilateral hydronephrosis.
• Urethral stricture
Examples of Extrinsic Causes of Hydronephrosis
Ureter
•Tumors or cancers that compress the ureter and prevent urine flow
•Retroperitoneal fibrosis
•Cancer of cervix
•Cancer of prostate
•Pregnancy
•Uterine prolapse
•Scarring due to radiation therapy
Symptoms:
Acute hydronephrosis:
1.Back pain radiating to groin
2.Nausea
3.Vomiting
4.Blood in the urine
Chronic hydronephrosis:
1.Weakness
2.Malaise
3.Nausea
4.Vomiting
5.Electrolyte abnormalities
6.Muscle spasms
Diagnosis:
Taking the history of signs and symptoms.
Reviewing the patient’s past medical history and family history and Physical examination
Laboratory Tests
The following laboratory tests may be useful:
1.Urinalysis to look for infection or abnormal cells.
2.Complete blood count(CBC) may reveal.
3.Electrlyte analysis may be helpful in chronic hydronephrosis since the kidneys are responsible for maintaining and balancing their concentrations in the blood stream.
4.BUN(blood urea nitrogen), Creatinine and glomerular filteration rate(GFR) are blood tests that help to assess the kidney function.
Imaging Studies
1.CT scan of the abdomen can be performed to evaluate the kidney anatomy and make the diagnosis of hydronephrosis
2.Ultrasound is another imaging study that can be done to look for hydronephrosis.
3.Intravenous pyelography (IVP)
4.KUB X-rays (an X-ray that shows the kidney, ureter, and bladder)
Treatment:
The treatment for hydronephrosis is to restart the free flow of urine from the kidney and decrease the swelling and pressure that builds up and decreases kidney function.
The initial care for the patient is to minimize pain and preventing urinary tract infections.
Otherwise surgical intervention may be required.
Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL or extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy)
Bladder catheterization
Stent placement
Complications :
kidney infections (pyelonephrosis),
sepsis
complete kidney function loss
death
Prevention:
Since hydronephrosis is a situation that occurs because of an underlying cause, prevention depends upon avoiding the underlying cause.
For example, individuals with kidney stones that cause ureteral obstruction and hydronephrosis can be avoided by decreasing the chance of stone recurrence by keeping well hydrated.
Homoeopathic Treatment:
1.Berberis vulgaris:
a.cutting pain or a burning feeling that extends to the urethra
b.The passage may also burn at times when no attempt at urination is being made.
c.After emptying the bladder, the person feels as if some urine still remains inside.
d.Urging and discomfort are often worse from walking.
e.indicated mainly in left-sided renal stones.
2.Sarsaparilla:
a.Frequent urging is felt, with burning pain at the end of urination.
b.Urine passes when the person is standing up, but only dribbling occurs while sitting.
c.Flakes or sediment are sometimes seen in the urine.
d.excruciating pains from right kidney downwards.
3.Lycopodium:
a.This remedy may be helpful if a person has to urinate frequently during the night and passes large amounts of urine.
b.the person may feel a painful urge, but has to strain to make the urine flow.
c.Pain may be felt in the back before the urine passes
Remedies to Cure Back Pain
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on August 31st, 2010
Some people have their own remedies to reduce back pain. Not all of these remedies include medication and most can be attempted without experiencing any side effects. These remedies will not work for everyone because each injury can be a result of multiple different things. This article will give a brief description of five of the most common remedies. These remedies include breathing techniques, white willow bark, music therapy, capsaicin cream, and acupuncture.
Breathing techniques have been used for many years to cure back pain. Almost every breathing specialist will have a different method, but they all concentrate on one thing. All breathing techniques are focused around knowing how to properly breathe with your stomach. When breathing in your belly should be pushed put, however many people’s belly comes in as they inhale. By not breathing correctly you can be putting stress on multiple parts of your back. Most people do not think about breathing and do not know that by breathing properly you can reduce your pain.
The willow bark remedy is not so common. Using willow bark to cure pain dates clear back to Ancient Egyptian times. Willow bark contains a pain reliever called salicin. Upon entering the body salicin is converted to salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is known to relieve pain and inflammation. This method does however have some side effects. Salicylic acid can cause stomach ulcers, so therefore willow bark should be used in moderation.
Music therapy is common, however many people do not believe it works. Some people find music therapy a silly remedy of curing back pain but the truth is that is has been tested and proven to work. People that have tried music therapy normally like it. All music therapy sessions may be different but most commonly people relax while listening to southing music three to four times a day. This method of deep relaxation will calm the nerves and muscles thus reducing pain.
Capsaicin cream has also been around for many years. It has the same active ingredient as a chili pepper. When eating a chili pepper a hot tingling sensations over comes the mouth. The same concept is used in capsaicin cream. Capsaicin cream can be purchased at any drugstore and is sold over the counter. Capsaicin cream has the same effect on the body as a prescribed pain killer, however it does not work as quickly nor does it have the same side effects. Capsaicin cream is applied to the skin at the area where pain is experienced three to four times a day. Most people who have used capsaicin cream have found the end result to be successful.
The last remedy is acupuncture. Acupuncture is a traditional technique used by the Chinese. It is offered by a variety of physicians, but can sometimes be expensive. Acupuncture is performed by placing needles into the top layers of skin. There are many different theories about how acupuncture works. Most people think that when the needles are placed the brain is sent a signal that calms the nervous system. This may be true, but all that is known for sure is that acupuncture has a high success rate.
Importance of Vitamin C (ascorbic Acid) Supplements in Your Diet
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on August 31st, 2010
Although vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is the most popular vitamin supplement in the United States, in many respects it is the most controversial. Over the years many respected scientists have shared polarized views on the importance of vitamin C supplementation to human health. While researchers and experts may argue just how much vitamin C we need to consume, one thing about vitamin C is not controversial its essential role in human nutrition.
Food Sources
While most people think of citrus fruits as the best source of vitamin C, vegetables also contain high levels, especially broccoli, peppers, potatoes, and brussels sprouts. Exposure to air destroys Vitamin C, so it is important to eat fresh foods as quickly as possible. Although a salad from a salad bar is a healthier lunch choice than a hamburger, the vitamin C content of the fruits and vegetables from a salad bar is only a fraction of what it would be in a fresh salad. For example, freshly sliced cucumbers, if left standing, lose 41 percent and 49 percent of their vitamin C content within the first 3 hours. A sliced cantaloupe left uncovered in the refrigerator loses 35 percent of its vitamin C content in less than 24 hours.
Deficiency Signs and Symptoms
While most other animals can manufacture their own vitamin C, the human body does not have this luxury. Throughout history humans have suffered from the vitamin C-deficiency disease known as scurvy. The classic symptoms of scurvy are bleeding gums, poor wound healing, and extensive bruising. In addition to these symptoms, susceptibility to infection, hysteria, and depression are also hallmark features.
Scurvy affected many people in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Scurvy undoubtedly molded world history because rations supplied during military campaigns and long ocean voyages seldom contained adequate amounts of vitamin C.
During some parts of history, scurvy hit a population just like the plague. Between 1556 and 1857, for example, 114 epidemics of scurvy were reported during the winter months, when fresh fruits and vegetables are not available. Even more severe was the devastating scurvy associated with long sea voyages.
Some explorers, like Jacques Cartier in 1856, learned that eating certain foods helped cure scurvy. Cartier’s crew ate spruce tree needles; other crews ate oranges, lemons, limes, and berries. In 1742, British physician James Lind wrote the first real scientific discussion about the possibility that scurvy was a dietary deficiency. In his classic experiment, Lind demonstrated that patients given lemon juice recovered from scurvy. Although some explorers adopted Lind’s finding by rationing citrus fruits on long voyages Captain James Cook’s crew avoided scurvy altogether in his three long voyages between 1768 and 1779 the British Navy did not adopt the use of lime juice rations for its crews until 1804, some 62 years after Lind’s discovery. Today’s mainstream medical community appears to have adopted the same timeline for integrating scientific information about the importance of nutrition.
Vitamin C was identified as the “antiscorbutic principle” and was first isolated by Albert Sent-Gyorgyi in 1928. Nearly 70 years later, researchers are still discovering health-promoting benefits for ascorbic acid. Although scurvy is now rare in our society, subclinical or marginal vitamin C deficiency is common, especially in the elderly. The following table illustrates the percentages of population groups with unequivocally low vitamin C levels as determined by measuring the vitamin C content of the buffy coat layer of blood. The buffy coat consists of all the cellular components of blood, but primarily white blood cells.
Vitamin C (ascorbic Acid) Supplements, Coronary Bypass and Cancer
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on August 30th, 2010
Coronary Bypass
Hospitals rarely employ vitamin C supplementation, despite the possible significant advantages of doing so and despite the frequently low-vitamin C status of hospitalized patients. To illustrate the apparent need for vitamin C supplementation in the hospital, let’s look at a study analyzing the vitamin C status of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass. In this study, the plasma concentration of vitamin C plummeted by 70 percent 24 hours after coronary artery bypass surgery and persisted in most patients up to 2 weeks after surgery.25 In contrast, vitamin E and carotenoid levels.
did not change to any significant degree, presumably because they are fat-soluble and therefore the body retains them for longer periods of time. Given the importance of vitamin C the serious depletion of vitamin C may deteriorate defense mechanisms against free radicals, infection, and wound repair in these patients supplementation appears to be essential in patients recovering from heart surgery, or any surgery for that matter.
Cancer Prevention
Vitamin C performs many functions that may offer protection against cancer, including acting as an antioxidant and protecting cellular structures (including DNA) from damage. Vitamin C also helps the body deal with environmental pollution and toxic chemicals, enhance immune function, and inhibit the formation of cancer-causing compounds in the body.
The epidemiological evidence of a protective effect of vitamin C against cancer is undeniable. A high vitamin C intake reduces the risk for virtually all forms of cancer, including cancers of the lung, colon, breast, cervix, esophagus, oral cavity, and pancreas. The bottom line from all of the research is once again that Americans need to increase the consumption of foods high in vitamin C and possibly supplement with vitamin C for added protection. While most of this evidence is based upon a high vitamin C intake from foods also rich in carotenes and other protective nutrients against cancer, a few of the studies also looked at supplementation. Let’s examine the evidence in some of these cancers in closer detail.
Lung Cancer
Of the 11 investigations into the role of vitamin C against lung cancer, 9 found reduced risk with high intake of Vitamin C. In five of these studies, the results were quite significant and in four of these five studies the protection offered by vitamin C was greater than that provided by beta-carotene in several of the studies. Gladys Block, one of America’s foremost authorities on the role of antioxidant intake and cancer risk, has stated that “Whereas a large body of evidence suggests an important effect for carotenoids in lung cancer prevention, the recent data suggests that there may be an independent protective effect of vitamin C intake.”
Stomach, Esophageal, and Oral Cancers
Seven of eight oral cancer studies found low vitamin C intake to be a major risk factor. Persons with the lowest vitamin C intake had a twofold increase in oral cancer compared to persons with the highest vitamin C intake. Similar results were seen in esophageal cancer. In stomach cancer, all 16 investigations in stomach cancer showed a substantial reduction in risk with high vitamin C intake. Stomach cancer is linked to excessive formation of cancer-causing compounds known as nitrosamines within the stomach. Nitrosamines are formed most of the time by ingesting nitrates and nitrites used in the production of cured meats (e.g., bacon). Vitamin C significantly inhibits the formation of nitrosamines.
Breast Cancer
A meta-analysis of the role of dietary factors in breast cancer concluded “Vitamin C intake had the most consistent and statistically significant inverse association with breast cancer risk. The level of vitamin C was more important than the intake of saturated fat, beta-carotene, and vitamin E.
Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer risk is increased dramatically with low vitamin C intake. Women with intakes less than 88 milligrams have a fourfold increase compared with women with higher intakes. Women with cervical dysplasia (a precancerous condition) and carcinoma in situ show a significant decrease in vitamin C intake and blood levels compared with women with normal cervixes. Inadequate vitamin C intake is an independent risk factor for the development of cervical dysplasia and carcinoma in situ.
Pancreatic Cancer
High vitamin C intake reduces the risk for pancreatic cancer in six out of seven studies. The risk for pancreatic cancer in someone consuming less than 70 milligrams of vitamin C per day is 2.6 times greater than for someone consuming 159 milligrams per day.
Colon Cancer
Six out of eight studies show a high intake of vitamin C reduces the risk for colon cancer. Low vitamin C intake carries with it almost a twofold increase in risk for colon cancer.26-27 In a study conducted by the National Cancer Institute, vitamin C reduced the formation of cancer-causing chemicals by bacteria in the colon.
What Are the Treatments For Allergies?
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on August 30th, 2010
The treatments of allergies can vary depending on what types of reactions you experience. There are often medical therapies available for sensitivities, but sometimes the treatments are very unconventional. This article will briefly describe the remedies of aversions and how they work.
Before discussing the various treatments of vulnerabilities it is important to know what allergies are. They are caused by inflammation of mucus membranes that outline the nasal passage. When the membranes become inflamed the nasal passage is irritated, and this can be extremely uncomfortable.
In most cases a doctor will suggest that you have a test done to see what exactly you are susceptible to. The test consists of filing needles with different things that you may be vulnerable to and injecting small amounts into the body. If any irritation occurs, then most likely you are sensitive to that substance.
After performing the test you will then be presented with a variety of remedy options. These treatments can include anything for prescription medication taken orally, weekly or monthly shots, and even acupuncture. These are not the only types of treatments for reactions however they are the most common.
We will start by discussing oral medication. Oral medication is the most commonly used remedies for allergies. Oral medication consists of taking a prescription pill, one or two times a day. These pills can also be taken as needed, however that is not as common. Most likely if you are experience allergies bad enough to consult a doctor then you need to take medication on a regular basis. Medication for reactions can be quite convenient and can reduce the amount of allergy symptoms you encounter.
Weekly or monthly injections are also a common therapy method for aversions. In order to need these shots, your sensitivities will need to be extremely severe. Most people that get shots for their hypersensitivities will have the shots on a monthly basis; however some may need it on a weekly basis. All of this will depend on the severity of the symptoms. The injection is more commonly used in younger children. It is harder to get younger children to medication on a daily basis; therefore most doctors will recommend the shots.
The last therapy to be discussed is acupuncture. Acupuncture is a common treatment for allergies; however it is not the most conventional. Some people do not believe in acupuncture because it is not an exact science, but it has been proven to work. No one has yet to figure out how it really works. The procedure is done by placing needles into specific regions of the body, and this is thought the clear up your sensitivity symptoms. Those who have tried it normally found great success with it, but those people are few and far between. This may take several weeks.
As previously stated all of these methods are used to treat allergies. Some may be more conventional than others; however they are all used on a regular basis. When experiencing sensitivities it is important to take all of your options into consideration.
Being Prepared - First Aid Kits
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on August 30th, 2010
A first aid kit should be an essential item for any home or business and maintaining it correctly can be the different between life and death. Incidents often arise when you least expect them and being able to respond quickly is critical.
Workplaces are legally required to have first aid kits and equipment. They must also provide training so that select employees can perform basic first aid. This approach usually means that you are covered while at work but what happens when you are out on the road or at home? Are you and your family covered while out on a day trip?
Many families stock only the very basic first aid items such as plasters and don’t have a fully stocked first aid kit in the home. This means that they might not be able to respond an incident as effectively as possible. First aid professionals recommend regular checks of your first aid supplies and keeping them well maintained. An all in one first aid kit is often the best solution.
The problem that many home owners face is not knowing what should be included in a first aid kit. A good first aid kit will contain plasters, bandages, wound dressing, burn creams, cold compresses, safety pins, adhesive tape, tweezers and scissors and emergency leaflets. Some would argue that tablets and medicines should be included however they should be kept separate. You don’t want to contaminate the two.
There are many retailers who sell kits who include such items. The important thing from an individual’s point of view is to make sure all the items are up to date and to make sure you have enough of them. It’s also a good idea to make sure that everyone in your home knows where the first aid kit is located.
Throughout the year we will spend a large proportion of our time travelling. This maybe because we are going to work or we are away for holiday or day trip. People often get caught out on these occasions because they forget to prepare for possible accidents. Professionals recommend having a first aid for the car and also travel first aid kits for any holidays.
Travel first aid kits often differ from regular first aid kits because the supplies will reflect the different climates. If you are going to a warm country with lots of insects then you will need a kit with plenty of bite creams and repellent. At home in the UK you would often not need such items. First aid kits for the car are often much smaller than regular kits. They usually contain the bare essentials and can be kept neatly in the boot compartment of your car.
Success in any of these areas comes down to preparation. If you are taking a trip make sure that you take a first aid kit with you. Check that it contains the right items. If you own two cars make sure you have a first aid kit for each. These simple things can make a real difference in an emergency situation and protect the people around you.
Ears Hearing - Be Mild, Otherwise You’ll Be Deaf
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on August 29th, 2010
A single of the most essential parts of our body may be the ear which helps us to detect and also hear sound. Audition is the sense of sound’s scientific name. Sound could be considered as that form of energy, which can travel through other forms of matter within the form of “waves of pressure”; it also helps us as important means of communication.
The sound is modulated into various types that we differentiate as languages and use the same to communicate what we believe. The ear is one of the five sense organs, with the primary role of recognizing and sensing sound. Using the assist of our central nervous system, we hear it and realize it. The sound waves pass through the nerve cells within the nervous system that’s responsible for the auditory function and reaches the brain.
Our ear’s outer parts are structured in a way that they collect maximum sound from your environment. The sound waves which are collected by the outer portion is then amplified by the middle portion and then forwarded from the air medium to liquid medium. The transformation of medium from air to liquid occurs as they sound waves travel with the ear.
The densest bone in our body may be the temporal bone that is present in the inner portion of the ear. Liquid with sensory epithelium and hair cells are present within the empty inner channels of our ear.
The sound waves which move with the fluid epithelium push the protein filaments; the hair cells fires when the filaments bend over are sufficient. This is the process, by which sound waves are converted into nerve impulse. Cerebral cortex is that part from the brain whose function is to interpret senses that’s being converted into impulse.
Unknowingly or knowingly we tend to hurt our ears, by listening to sounds beyond the hearing capacity of our ears. This high volume sounds will cause damage to our ears as they are very sensitive in nature. Individuals should be aware of the seam limits that our ears can accommodate and should make certain that, we are nicely within the limit. In fact hearing disability has been increasing in the recent past, as people often hear amplified sounds and love to do it.
Ear drums are really first damaged, when a prolonged exposure to sounds that’s nicely above the hearable limit. This in turn makes it hard for them to hear sounds, and eventually would lead to a hearing disability thereby making them deaf; and certainly that is not something one would wish to happen. This can be prevented, by avoiding higher volume sounds and also maintaining the sound at a degree that is very gentle to our ears. An easy check on the degree of sound could be kept, to ensure that we don’t exceed it. Ears are really sensitive and that is why factories provide their workers with ear covers/ear plugs, to protect their ears from your high volume sounds produced by the machines that are planted there.
How Much Do You Think You Know About Bacterial Vaginosis?
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on August 29th, 2010
BV, or commonly being referred as Bacterial Vaginosis by many women and health practitioners is among the many types of vaginal infections that affect millions of women around the world every year. In certain countries in the world, BV is also referred as vaginitis or just vaginosis. In fact, they are all referring to the same thing even though the medical terms might differ a little.
If you do a search on Google, you will also see some other similar terms like Trichomoniasis, Candida, yeast infections or HPV. However, these are other types of vaginal infections and are not directly related to bacterial vaginosis in any sense.
The most important thing to know about bacterial vaginosis is that it’s not life threatening. It will not lead to death. Don’t be scared if on one unlucky day your doctor tells you that you are suffering from bacterial vaginosis.
However, the impact of bacterial vaginosis towards your daily lifestyle cannot be underestimated as well. It will be significant. It might take a heavy toll on you, both mentally and physically.
You might feel separated and abandoned by your partner and group of friends because of the strong fishy odor from the vaginal areas which is caused by bacterial vaginosis. You might also be challenged physically because of the burning and itching sensations you might experience throughout the day.
Therefore, it is absolutely vital that you get immediate treatment and medications once you think you are showing the signs and symptoms of BV, especially the two which has been discussed above. It makes it easier to get rid of BV the earlier it is detected.
A prolonged and untreated bacterial vaginosis could become chronic which then leads to long term and other complicated problems like infertility.
One of the main reasons almost every 1 out of 4 women will suffer from bacterial vaginosis in their lifetime is because the delicate vaginal flora is disrupted. It can happen due to many reasons and it differs from women to women. Some of the examples are hormonal changes, prolonged sickness, pregnancy, stress, menopause, unhealthy diet, unhealthy vaginal hygiene and oral sex. In some rare cases, even the brands of soaps used for bath are shown to lead to bacterial vaginosis. You might be surprised, but it’s true!
Some people might ask how can a imbalance or disrupted vaginal flora leads to bacterial vaginosis. That is mainly because they do not know what is a vaginal flora and how it works.
The vaginal system is a very complex and sensitive ecosystem where up to a thousand of different bacteria are found to be inhibiting in there at any given time. There are mainly 2 types of bacteria, Lactobacili (the good ones) and Anaerobes (the bad ones). The main purpose of Lactobacili is to prevent the Anaerobes from over populating the vaginal system. Both of these bacteria live in a perfect balance to form a healthy vaginal flora.
From tests done in the lab, a perfectly healthy vaginal system would be around 3.8pH to 4.5pH. If the Anaerobes starts to grow more than the Lactobacili, that’s where the problem starts which could eventually lead to bacterial vaginosis.
Cold Sores: What Causes A Cold Sore And How Can I Stop It?
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on August 29th, 2010
Cold sores are a dreadful ordeal for millions of folks worldwide. These undesirable sores are made by the herpes simplex virus. Nearly 90% of world residents are host to this virus.
Happily there are some very potent ways to cure and prevent cold sores. You can choose to use doctor prescribed medications or natural treatments.
Cold sores are tissue damaging sores that commonly emerge near the mouth or nasal area. Kissing is the normal way you will get infected, or infect someone else. They are extremely contagious and most often passed to another by direct contact with an active sore or virus-laden saliva.
The first indications of an approaching sore you will feel are an itching, burning or tingling, and then red blisters will begin to appear.
They happen primarily due to triggers, such as stress or sickness that suppresses your defenses. Provided you can develop a robust immune structure, you will positively cut down on occurrences of these attacks.
If you are susceptible to outbreaks, you would be really smart to start a good multi-vitamin regimen. Positively look for large quantities of vitamins B, C, A and D to halt or lessen your breakouts.
Another popular natural cold sore remedy is the amino acid lysine. This is a simple protein present in many foods and available as a supplement in capsule form. Lysine works by deactivating the herpes virus.
If you get profuse cold sores, you follow the success of others and take one or two capsules daily as a preventative. If you only get an outbreak two or three times a year, just use lysine during the event.
Zinc is the healing mineral that will help you repair and curtail sores. Zinc is sold in tablet or capsule form. Zinc is the leading mineral for enhancing and maintaining a serious immunity to viruses like herpes.
Quite a few affected people make a thick salve by mixing powdered zinc and water. You will get more pleasing results by using the kind of zinc found in zinc lozenges for colds. This form is designed to absorb dependably.
One of the commonly used pharmacy obtained treatments is a salve incorporating acyclovir. This treatment requires you to put on the salve a minimum of five daily applications for five constant days.
A similar FDA supported lotion providing pharmaceutical anti-viral activity is Penciclovir. You are required to apply it for four successive days, every two hours while you are awake. It may help the first few times you use it, or until the herpes virus develops immunity to it. These anti-viral creams work by protecting adjacent cells from being invaded by the herpes virus.
These pharmaceutical virus medicating creams are not cheap and are more effort than I care for. Natural cold sore remedies usually give more satisfying results for nearly free.
A number of folks use oral prescription tablets incorporating valacyclovir or famciclovir as a cold sore treatment. These anti-viral medications are carried to the sore via your bloodstream.
You need a doctor’s supervision to take these medicines. It also is good to remember that they can be hard on your liver. Another big downside of prescription cold sore treatments is that the virus will rapidly become immune to them.
Other remedies that can be purchased over the counter at a drug store can be ointments with nerve-deadening ingredients. These will help stifle severity by numbing the nerves exposed by the sore. Examine the label for lidocaine or benzocaine.
Cold sores are quite nuisance in your life. They are especially annoying because they occur at the most inconvenient times. There are some over-the-counter remedies at the store made up of natural medicating remedies. These, also, give a measure of comfort.
The secret to winning with any cold sore abatement plan is to commence as soon as you can. That means act as quickly as you feel that first tingling sensation.
To devise a treatment plan that best performs for you will require you to test different remedies and blends of therapies.
If you get successive or especially bad outbreaks, you should see a health practitioner for more in depth information relating directly to your own requirements.
Lastly, you should stay on the lookout for new remedies. You would be smart to visit reliable, popular sites that are completely focused on providing you useful facts, tips, information and a lot of home remedies for cold sores.
The Most Effective Home Sinusitis Remedies Out There
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on August 28th, 2010
Almost daily I am bombarded by questions from patients concerning the newest sinusitis remedies that promise to be the best and quickest fix for sinus problems. The majority of these are poorly researched and thus rarely give any symptomatic relief. But there are a few time tested sinusitis remedies that bring true relief. So here’s a list of ones I’ve found to actually work with patients
Food Allergy Cross Reactions
Very often people who suffer from seasonal allergies also suffer from food reactions. Most attention of allergies in sinusitis is focused on reducing seasonal pollen exposure or other environmental exposure, but many foods have the same property or are similar in structure to pollen that it causes the same reaction. We call this cross reaction. Here is a list of common seasonal allergies that foods often cross react with
If you are allergic to berch pollen the foods that can cross react include apples, celery, hazelnuts, peaches, pears and raw potatoes.
If you are allergic to ragweed pollen the foods that can cross react include bananas and melons.
If you are allergic to grasses the foods that can cross react include kiwi and tomatoes
If you are allergic to mugwort pollen the foods that can cross react include apples, carrots, kiwi, peanuts, parsley, coriander, fennel seeds and caraway seeds.
Consider avoiding the foods that can cross react to your allergen for a few weeks. A basic search on the internet can also help you find foods that can cross react to other seasonal pollens.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Fan of spicy foods? Then this is the right remedy for you. Capsaician from red hot chili peppers has great medicinal properties for your sinuses. This little molecule helps break up mucus congestion and dilates the sinuses to help promote appropriate drainage. Try using recipes that call for red hot chili peppers on a regular basis and you’ll quickly notice sinus relief after these meals. These peppers are actually very easy to grow and I have a few friends who grow them indoors throughout the whole year.
Ginger
For those of you who can’t seem to stomach red hot chili peppers, this one is for you. Its medicinal properties mirror chili peppers as it helps reduce mucus buildup and facilitates proper mucus drainage. I prefer using this in a tea, drinking it 2-3 times a day. Be prepared to experience a slight sweat after drinking this tea. Also for those of you who have sinusitis dizziness, this herb will clear that up quickly.
Dietary changes
By far this tends to be the most effective method – albeit it is also the most life altering. Many patients are either afraid or not quite convinced that certain foods they ingest can actually be the culprit behind their sinusitis. What it really comes down to is not an allergy reaction but a response to the innate properties of certain foods that cause excessive mucus secretion. As we all know excessive mucus in the majority of causes is the causative agent of sinusitis. So what are these foods? The number one food I have found with patients contributing to their sinusitis is milk. Yes, despite the slogan of “It does your body good” it also happens to be the worst food every for sinus infections. The next time you drink a glass of milk, pay attention to your body for the next 30 minutes. Most likely you’ll have to clear your throat or spit out thick saliva. That’s because milk thickens your natural secretions within minutes. Another mucus secretion food – soy. I usually put my patients on a rice, almond or potato milk substitute for a month when I believe milk is an issue. Sound hard, come on, anyone can do a month without dairy. Not only will your sinuses clear up but often I hear patients telling me they have lost weight or just seem to have more energy.
Vitamin C
One of the best sinusitis remedies on the market. Its antioxidant properties are already known but it also has been shown in research to inhibit mast cell degranualtion. Mast cells secrete histamine that is a major mediator of mucus congestion and other sinusitis symptoms. The problem with Vitamin C though is that most people don’t take enough. Linus Pauling, the Nobel Prize winner for Vitamin C suggested taking large dosages to get this effect, in the 3-5 gram range whereas most people take milligram doses (1000mg is one gram). I typically stick to Linus Pauling’s recommendations by taking 2-4 grams daily. Vitamin C is extremely safe and your body will tell you if it’s getting to much by causing slight diarrhea. If you do experience diarrhea, back off the vitamin C slightly until it stops and that is your dosage to take.
