You Could Have Periodontal Disease and Not Even Know It!
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on July 28th, 2010
Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) is quite stealthy…it is one of those afflictions that takes hold in your body and you don’t even know it’s there until it has already done some severe damage to your teeth, tissues, bones and even your overall health. In fact, 70 percent of tooth loss is attributed to gum disease. And periodontal disease has been shown to do much more damage than just to your oral health; it has been linked to strokes, heart disease, diabetes and pre-term, low birth-weight pregnancies.
There are a variety of risk factors that can contribute to gum disease such as smoking, poor oral hygiene, female hormonal fluctuations (such as in pregnancy and menopause), genetic predisposition, a diet high in sugar, stress, substance abuse and some medications. But the most common and most easily controllable factor in periodontal disease is the sticky, colorless film in your mouth known as plaque. This bacterial plaque releases toxins that break down the natural fibers that bond your gums to your teeth. When this occurs pockets can form between your teeth and gums giving the bacteria a place to hide as they do their destructive work on your teeth, gums and the bones beneath your teeth.
There are basically four stages of periodontal disease:
-Gingivitis – Gums are inflamed
-Early Periodontitis – An infection has begun to destroy the bone that holds your tooth or teeth
-Moderate Periodontitis – Significant bone loss is occurring
-Advanced Periodontitis – Severe bone loss has occurred
If you currently have any of the following symptoms, there is a good chance that you have advanced periodontal disease and a trip to your dentist is imperative, not only for your oral health but your overall health as well.
-Gums that are red, swollen, tender or bleeding
-Sensitivity in your teeth
-Pain when you chew
-Loose or separating teeth
-Gums that have pulled away from your teeth
-A change in the way that your teeth fit together
-Persistent bad breath
-A change in how your partial dentures fit
-Pus between your teeth and gums
But the good news is that if you make regular trips to your dentist at least twice a year for a dental checkup, your dentist can find gum disease in even its very earliest stages and it can be treated and progression stopped. By working together with your dentist, you can ensure that periodontal disease will not have an opportunity to do any damage to your teeth or health.
To begin with, good daily oral hygiene habits are very important so that the bacterial plague that is constantly occurring in your mouth can be removed before it turns into tartar which can develop both above and below your gum line and cause deterioration and infections. Your dental professional can help ensure that you are brushing and flossing correctly to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
If your dentist does find indications of periodontal disease, there are a variety of treatments that can be used depending on the stage of the disease. Ideally, you want to prevent gum disease altogether and to do that, it is important that you maintain good daily oral hygiene habits and visit your dentist at least every six months so that if gum disease does get started, it can be found in its very early stages and stopped it in its tracks.
Natural Solutions to Fibromyalgia Medication
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on July 28th, 2010
As most of those suffering with firbromyalgia already know, it is difficult to treat. Usually you’ll need a doctor who has expert knowledge in this area, as a lot of doctors and physicians won’t be familiar with how it can be treated. That said there are still many things you can do on a daily basis to provide considerable relief and make it as easy and comfortable to live with as possible.
In this article, we’ll look at some alternatives that any fibromyalgia arthritis sufferer can do to experience relief, aside from taking medication. Many of these things may be obvious to you, and some not so, but either way these are some fibromyalgia treatments you should try incorporating into your life as much as possible. Here are some lifestyle changes to that could prove very beneficial:
Get A Good Night Sleep: Although it may be difficult for a fibromyalgia arthritis sufferer to get a good night sleep due to pain, getting enough of the right amount has been shown to be very effective at easing pain and tiredness associated with this illness. If you’re having trouble sleeping on a regular basis, don’t just assume that there’s nothing you can do. Consider investigating methods that will improve your quality of sleep. Often by making simple changes you can see important results. In this respect avoiding depression will help you get a good nights sleep, since negative emotions make you more susceptible to being depressed. One approach that has been found effective is meditation and other relaxation techniques. Another is exercise.
Get Some Exercise: Again, this definitely isn’t easy for a fibromyalgia arthritis sufferer, but in the same way as sleep, although it can be hard, the effects of exercise will have a positive effect. The key is to just make sure you are some- what active during the day, even if it’s just a short easy walk or other form of gentle exercise. You can build the endurance and intensity up over time as you progress.
Get Natural Fibromyalgia Pain Relief from Essential Oils: You can use essential oils for relaxation (lavender) and natural pain relief (Basil and Marjoram, mixed with massage oil and rubbed in is often effective and can quickly relieve spasms and cramps; Peppermint oil stops that dull aching pain). I must advise you that I only use pure, therapeutic grade oils, organically grown, harvested at peak times, and distilled at low heat very slowly, with no solvents or additives. Using cheaper oils that may not be pure or may have been processed at high heat (which destroys the delicate constituents of the plant) as many of the cheaper oils are, will probably not give the same effect as pure therapeutic grade oils. One of the essential oil blends that I use with success is lavender and peppermint, about 4 drops of each mixed with sesame oil and applied to areas of pain.
Eat Well: Although there are no foods that are magic bullets that will cure fibromyalgia arthritis directly, eating well is extremely important in that it will make you feel better overall, as well as making things like getting enough quality sleep and exercise easier. It would also be a good idea to track what particular foods have a positive or negative effect on your fibromyalgia arthritis. Many patients report that they feel better after eating or avoiding certain foods.
To sum up, these solutions may not seem easy, but they all work together. If you eat well and do easy exercise, not only will you reduce the pain, but you’ll probably find it easier to sleep better. And getting a good night sleep, you’ll likely find it easier to do more exercise and so on and so forth. It’s not easy, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives.
The Chinese Secret To Alternative Medicine
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on July 27th, 2010
The popularity of Chinese medicine has been on the rise in the Western World. The increasing amount of illnesses and dwindling amount of treatments have left many Americans no choice. This quest for a cure is not in vain as this traditional medicine has been benefiting the Chinese for over 2000 years. Three major methods of this traditional medicine are still commonly practiced today amongst the Chinese and Americans alike.
Herbal Medicine
Herbs are seen as the simplest way to improve ailments. With all of the detailed classifications behind Western medicines, where an accidental mix-up could prove fatal, Chinese medicine is more user-friendly to the average consumer. The herbs are separated into five basic categories: Bitter herbs, such as gardenia, are seen as being beneficial for the heart and have the ability to purge the bowels; Sweet herbs, such as Licorice, can relieve pain and restore energy. Sweet herbs are especially helpful to Chinese herbologists in the treatment of sore throat, hyperthyroidism, and muscle spasms; Ginger, the most common spicy herb, stimulates the body to sweat, and increases blood flow; Sour herbs such as the dogwood fruit are used to reduce excessive sweating and control chronic diarrhea due to their absorbing nature; Finally, salty herbs such as gaulber’s salt are helpful in softening masses such as cysts.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is well summed up by its meaning, “needle, to prick.” This is the most controversial method of Chinese medicine to Western doctors. However, many patients who sought acupuncture as a way of treatment are pleased with the results. In fact, many doctors in the United States have begun to study the practice and offer it at specialized clinics.
A session begins with the patient describing symptoms. Afterwards, he then lies on his stomach or back depending on needle placement. Acupuncture is a relatively painless treatment with the exception of a brief sensation when the hair-thin needles are first inserted. The thought behind the practice is that the harmony within the body is off balance, and that inserting the needles in different locations and depths restores that balance.
Massage Stones
Massage stones are closely tied to acupuncture because they share many of the same pressure points to realign the body’s balance. The stones are very versatile and can be heated, used with oil, or chilled. Hot stone massages have become very popular in spas today. Heated stones are placed over the body so that the heat deeply penetrates into aching muscles. When stones are used with oil, there is less focus placed on physical relief and more on mental relaxation. The scented oils, along with the smooth rocks, help to put one’s mind at ease and melt away daily stresses.
The stones can vary as well. Metamorphic stones, which have the ability to retain heat, are commonly used in heated massages. Textured stones are a helpful aid in sports massages, while round, flat stones are laid on a client who is interested in a calming, balanced effect. No matter what type of stone a masseuse uses, the main purpose of the stone is as an aid—an extended tool—in the massage.
How to Cure Tinnitus?
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on July 27th, 2010
Have you ever heard some weird, swishing or ringing sounds in the ear? And, are you just the only one who could hear it? That’s probably Tinnitus.
Tinnitus is the term used for the noise or sound that seems to emanate from the ear or even the head. These weird, and oftentimes irritating, sounds or noises that you hear may specifically originate from any of the following area: the inner ear, middle ear and the outer ear. Or, it may also be caused by some brain abnormalities. This ear condition is usually considered as a nuisance that can be resolved immediately and not as a serious problem. Sometimes, however, tinnitus is not just a single disease but rather an indication of an underlying illness like diabetes and thyroid problem.
There are actually head or body noises that are normal but you can’t hear them because external noises masks these noises. But once you enter a sound proof booth, you would be aware of these normal sounds. You also become more aware of these noises or sounds once wax or other foreign bodies accumulate in the external ear. This is possible since these particles blocks the outside sounds. Aside from these, tinnitus could also be a product of other factors like stress, over intake of aspirin and caffeine and even pregnancy. If you are one of those people experiencing these disturbing sounds and is asking how to cure tinnitus, please read ahead.
Majority of tinnitus cases do not need serious medical attention since it goes away by itself. There are some people though who are diagnosed of having a permanent tinnitus. Hence, it’s something that they have to live with. Given the case, doctors recommend Niacin, a part of human diet that is vital in some of the body’s chemical reaction. This substance’s effect on tinnitus though is not clear as there are no scientific evidences that articulate its ability to combat tinnitus.
After being diagnosed of tinnitus, physicians also give recommendations on how this ear condition can be relieved. Once you had acquired this condition, they say it is important to keep in mind how sensitive and delicate the hearing system is. It is connected to the nervous system so it could affect a person’s overall health. To lessen the effects of tinnitus, it is essential that the patient avoid exposure to explosive or very loud outside sounds like high-intensity music. Also, he or she should control blood pressure though medications and lessen the intake of salty food and aspirin products.
Coffee, nicotine and other nerve stimulants should also be avoided. Furthermore, since stress is said to be one of the factors that worsen tinnitus, calming and relaxing exercises like meditation and yoga are advisable. And just like any other illness or health condition, adequate rest should be also be observed by tinnitus sufferers.
There is no definite treatment method for tinnitus except when it is a by-product of an underlying disease. Its treatment depends on its cause so better consult your doctor first.
The Causes and Treatments of Gum Disease
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on July 27th, 2010
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, can range from gingivitis, which is the first stage where the gums are inflamed, to advanced periodontitis where severe bone loss has occurred. Until it is in the extreme stages where infection exists and severe damage is being done, periodontal disease does not have any symptoms.
Studies show that over “80 percent of American adults currently have some form of the disease” and while not everyone gets gum disease, there are certain risk factors that can elevate the probability:
•Poor Oral Hygiene – Plaque is constantly being created in the mouth and when plaque is not removed by brushing and flossing, it develops into tartar (also known as calculus), which can only be removed by a dental professional using special tools.
•Smoking – A very significant risk factor, smoking is the “single major preventable risk factor for periodontal disease.” The risk of gum disease actually increases with the number of cigarettes smoked per day and pipes and cigars have the same risk potential.
•Diet High On Sugar Intake – Bacteria that are constantly available in the mouth, when combined with sugar, create an acid that attacks the enamel of the teeth and causes gum disease.
•Hormonal Changes in Women – Female hormones make the gums more susceptible to periodontal disease…especially with pregnancy and during and after menopause.
•Genetics – According to the American Academy of Periodontology, studies have indicated that “approximately 30 percent of the population may be genetically predisposed to periodontal disease.”
•Diabetes – Patients with diabetes have susceptibility for developing infections… and this includes gum infections.
•Substance Abuse – Gums and teeth can be damaged by the long-term abuse of either alcohol or illegal drugs such as amphetamines.
•Stress – When the body is under stress, it has a more difficult time of fighting infections, and psychological stress creates the release of inflammatory hormones which can trigger or escalate gum disease.
•Medications – From antidepressants to some types of heart medication…when a drug lessens the flow of saliva in the mouth, the gums are more prone to disease because saliva protects the teeth and gums.
But even with risk factors, periodontal disease does not have to cause havoc. By practicing good daily oral hygiene habits and making regular visits to the dentist for checkups and professional cleanings, gum disease can be prevented or treated. First of all, periodontal disease can typically be prevented by doing the following:
•Eating a well-balanced diet that is low in sugar
•Brushing at least twice a day or after every meal
•Flossing at least once a day (preferably before bedtime)
•Refraining from using tobacco products
•Visiting the dentist on a routine basis
In those cases where a patient does get periodontal disease, after a thorough periodontal examination, a dentist will be able to determine which of the treatment options is the best choice for the patient. These are the methods that are most often used to correct gum disease:
•Scaling and Root Planing – This is a deep cleaning method where a dental professional uses special tools to clean tartar and bacteria from above and below the gum line and to clean and smooth out tooth root surfaces.
•Laser Treatments – These treatments are sometimes used to close up any pockets and remove infected tissue.
•Pocket Reduction Surgery – When inflamed areas or ‘pockets’ are present, the dentist may perform a gentle surgery where a ‘flap’ on the gums is lifted back so that diseased tissue can be removed and the bones and gums can be repositioned if necessary to support the tooth.
•Grafting – If either bone or tissue have been lost because of the disease, the dentist may suggest grafting which can either replace lost bone or tissue or encourage new growth of either or both.
Periodontal disease is preventable. But in those cases where it does take hold, dental technology provides a myriad of treatments to bring the teeth, gums and jawbone back to full health.
The Causes, Symptoms and Treatments of TMJ
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on July 26th, 2010
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), also known as TMJ Disorder happens when the small triangular joints that open and close your jaw get out of sync. There are a variety of reasons why this could happen, including:
Grinding or Clenching Your Teeth – Ongoing grinding or clenching of your teeth puts a lot of pressure and strain on your joints, which is why this behavior is one of the most common causes of TMJ Disorder.
Misaligned Bite – When your upper and lower teeth do not line up properly, any jaw movement can cause wear and tear on the cartilage disks that cushion the TMJ or could cause the joint itself to become dislocated.
Worn or Torn Cartilage – Sometimes the cartilage disks that cushion the joint can become worn down which results in grinding of the jawbone.
Dislocated Temporomandibular Joint – When the joint becomes dislocated, it can impede the movement of the jaw resulting in strain and/or pain in that area.
Arthritis – With arthritis, inflammation and swelling can occur in the muscles, ligaments and tissues around the TMJ causing discomfort and pain.
Trauma to the Temporomandibular Joint – A blow to the jaw can occur in an auto accident, airbags deploying, a slip or fall where the face hits against something, or other various reasons, and when trauma occurs to that area of the face, the joint can become misaligned creating pain.
The symptoms of the disorder will vary for each individual afflicted with TMJ depending on the reason behind the dysfunction. For some, this disorder will produce little discomfort while for others it will cause significant pain. But any imbalance to the temporomandibular joint strains the related muscles and irritates the affected nerves causing a variety of unpleasant and painful symptoms including one or several of the following:
-Radiating pain in the face, neck and shoulders
-Headaches…from moderate to migraine
-Stiffness of the jaw muscle
-Pain in the jaw joint
-Painful clicking, grating or even popping in the jaw area when the mouth is opened or closed
-Ringing in the ears or ear aches
-Limited movement or locking of the jaw
-Tingling in the extremities
-A change in the way the upper and lower teeth fit together
-Pain in the teeth or cheek areas
When TMJ Disorder is the cause of your pain and discomfort, there are a variety of approaches that can be taken to correct the problem. Which approached to take is based upon a personal evaluation of your situation. The first step is a thorough dental examination of your mouth and bite. Your dentist may then suggest one or several of the following approaches:
-Applying ice and/or heat packs
-Doing gentle jaw relaxing and stretching exercises to strengthen your jaw muscles and help increase jaw movement
-Learning techniques for relaxing and reducing stress
-Using over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines
-Using a stabilization sprint or bit guard
-Correcting your bite or teeth alignment with dental restorations or orthodontics
For many people, TMJ is a painful and serious condition, but the pain caused by TMJ can be minimized or alleviated with your dentist’s guidance and instructions.
Is Psychoanalysis and CBT a Disease Masquerading as a Cure?
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on July 26th, 2010
Every year the use of antidepressants, antipsychotics and many other medications go up exponentially in an attempt to adjust or control one’s emotional state and behavior. As this trend continues NIMH and APA continue to support CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) as it continues to prove itself more ineffective than effective. Every year there are new stats on the number one cause of death. If you look closely at these stats the number one cause of death in the United States is one’s own behavior. The billions spent each year to support CBT are in part convincing people that it is working all the way to their grave.
The January 2009 New England Journal of Medicine noted that antipsychotic drugs doubled the risk of sudden cardiac death, while another study disclosed in March 2009 by Whang, et. al. found that antidepressant drugs also increase the rate of sudden cardiac death. If CBT or psychoanalysis worked why would there be a need to risk one’s life with a medication.
Children were the leading growth demographic for the pharmaceutical industry in 2009, with the increase of prescription drug use among youngsters nearly four times higher than in the overall population, according to a report by Medco Health Solutions Inc. Out of all the disturbing reports about our decline in behavioral health this one is the most disturbing.
Show Me the Data
CBT claims it is effective for depression with hundreds of studies yet finding one is almost impossible. When one is found it is usually in a structure that includes complex convoluted math formulas that even those who specialize in CBT cannot explain. By its own definition CBT is an experimental, observational, subjective modality. In contrast the only evidence-based program process in behavioral health and the only proven process for depression known as Subconscious Restructuring® have its studies readily available on its website with straight forward numbers generated by the client, not the counselor, therapist or psychiatrist.
From 1996 to 2005 the use of antidepressants doubled and the use of psychotherapy went down. More than 164 million prescriptions were written in 2008 for antidepressants, totaling $9.6 billion in U.S. sales, according to IMS Health. Even if one’s worst subject is math it is not difficult to calculate whether CBT and psychoanalysis is working.
CBT and psychoanalysis are single handedly driving profit up every year for the pharmaceutical companies by causing the illusion that it is effective for issues like depression. This illusion is maintained with billions of dollars spent each year by our government and the pharmaceutical companies.
If someone convinces you to use a medication that may increase suicidal thoughts or increase your chance of sudden cardiac arrest because they do not understand the processes of the subconscious, this can be referred to as a disease. It is time to start questioning CBT and every other behavioral health modality that claims to be effective regardless of how much the government or pharmaceutical companies spend to support it.
What is Bad Breath and How to Deal With It?
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on July 26th, 2010
The medical term for bad breath is halitosis, and is used to describe the unpleasant noticeable odor which is exhaled while breathing. Bad breath has a significant impact personally and even socially. Besides being annoying for the person who faces it, it is very embarrassing also.
In more than 80% of the cases Bad breath originates in the mouth of the victim itself. Mind it bad breath never originates from the stomach. There are anaerobic oral bacteria in our mouth which breakdown the food debris in the mouth and emit smell which is similar to rotten eggs and very unpleasant. These bacteria can only survive in oxygen free environment hence they live in areas which are difficult to reach like grooves in the tongue, pockets around the teeth and particularly on the back of the tongue. Bad breath is intense at night because mouth is not exposed to oxygen and remains inactive during night.
In some cases bad breath may be caused due to some other problems like respiratory tract infection, sinuses problem, postnasal drip, dieting, liver or kidney ailment, gum disease and external agents like cigarette smoking, garlic, onions, tobacco, coffee etc. These are the uncommon causes and more than 90% of the problems are caused due to bacteria and their work on the left over food particles in the mouth.
Many individuals think that bad breath problem is very difficult to cure and requires physician’s advice and drugs and so refrain from it. Getting a physicians advice is no doubt an ideal solution, but the problem can also be easily corrected if individuals takes some corrective, precautionary steps from their side and try removing the root cause.
As bad breath is caused because of the byproducts when bacteria digest proteins and food particles, minimizing the food supply available to the bacteria will aid a lot. It’s very important to thoroughly clean the mouth after eating food and especially if the food is rich in protein and spices. This is because even if we finish our meals, small minute particles get trapped between our teeth and posterior parts of tongue and provide meals to the bacteria. Individuals having vegetarian diet comprising of fruits and vegetables have less chances of bad breath than individuals who regularly consume non vegetarian items like meat and chicken.
Some of the oral bacteria that are responsible for bad breath and create waste products live in the dental plaque which accumulates on and around individual’s teeth, including below and on the gum line. Proper brushing clubbed with efficient flossing technique can remove the plaque and also food debris that is left in the mouth after consuming of food. And in case it’s not possible to brush your teeth after meal as you are out, make it a point to wash your mouth thoroughly with water and if you can gargle, it will be the best.
Bad breath is a problem shared by millions of people, and at the same time millions of people have also over taken it with proper measures. So please take the appropriate actions and don’t let bad breath dominate.
Getting Rid of Droopy Eyelids With Ptosis Surgery? Get the Facts First
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on July 25th, 2010
Eyelid ptosis can also be known as an upper eyelid that droops. If the edge of the lid droops down enough, a person’s eyesight is affected and in some cases can block vision. In some severe cases of ptosis, some may need to tilt their head back some in order to see and they may even need to use a finger to lift the droopy eyelid out of the way.
Causes of Ptosis
Congenital ptosis is seen at birth and is caused from a muscle that is poorly developed. However, it’s more commonly seen in adults where the eyelid muscle thins and causes the drooping eyelid. It happens with age, from some type of trauma, tumors, with those who wear contact lenses and even some neurological problems including myopathy or nerve palsy.
Who is a Good Candidate for Ptosis Repair?
You will be referred to an oculoplastic surgeon who will examine your eye or eyes. They will take a look at both the upper as well as the middle part of your face to see if they notice any asymmetry. They will also take some measurements of the eyelids and photos are taken as well. Your surgeon also examines the surface under the lids as well as the front surface with a microscope. They will then give you your options.
The Ptosis Treatment
For the surgery, you are usually only under local anesthesia and is done in a day. Drops of anesthetic are placed on the eyes and you will also have anesthetic placed in the upper eyelids to help with the numbing. An incision is made where your natural crease is and the muscle that helps to raise the eyelid is shortened to better lift the lid. There will be dissolving sutures placed on the inside of the lid as well as on the skin.
After Surgery
You may be advised to wear an eye patch for at least 24-48 hours after the procedure. You may notice some swelling in the upper eyelid for about a week or so. You should make sure the wound is clean at all times and you should also keep it dry. There should not be any type of discharge coming from the wound and if you do notice some you should notify your surgeon at once. Your doctor will give you detailed directions on how to care for your wound and you may or may not be prescribed with an antibiotic cream or ointment to use on the wound.
Are There Risks With This Procedure?
There are some minimal risks as there are with any procedure. Some of the common risks that are associated with this procedure include:
•Some swelling or possible bruising of the eye area
•Some infection from the wound
•Sometimes the eyelid may be too corrected leading in a high eyelid
•There may be under correction meaning the eyelid is too low and a second surgery may be required
•Some may notice it hard to close their eyelid that may be either permanent or even temporary. In this case lubricant eye drops may be needed.
Benefits of the Surgery
There are benefits to the surgery and can include:
•Symmetry and cosmesis are improved
•Appearance of the eyelid looks normal again
•Visual field is improved as well as the quality of vision from where the eye was covered
Costs
The cost of ptosis surgery can vary depending on many factors. The calibre of your surgeon, the location, the type of surgery required and other factors affect the cost. In some cases, insurance may cover the cost of the procedure if ptosis becomes a problem and affects your vision drastically. The average cost of the procedure can range from $1,500 to $5,000.
Choosing a Ptosis Procedure Surgeon
When it comes to choosing a surgeon, it does not matter what the procedure is, you need to feel comfortable with them. It is ok to ask questions and also asking for photos to see the type of work they deliver. When it comes down to it, it is all about how you personally feel about the surgeon.
Treatment Options And Facts For Drug Abuse
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on July 25th, 2010
Drug abuse is a serious problem in our society that can lead to a lot of major problems not only for our communities but also for our personal lives. There are a lot of options available for those who are interested in getting help with their drug abuse problem.
There is a Lot of Options for Drug Abuse Treatment
There are many different options for drug abuse treatments and a wide variety of outlets that offer treatment programs. These outlets range from religious organizations to organized comprehensive treatment programs provided at first class specialized hospitals. These programs can be as simple as controlled withdrawal and reeducation to ones which include more alternative options.
Many Outlets are Available for Drug Treatment Program
There are a wide variety of outlets which offered drug abuse treatment programs. The most common outlets offering programs are those that are religious or community based. These are often to be found at a local community center or church outreach center. The programs in this category are often offered to the public at little to no charge, they are funded by donations or by corporate gifts. On the other hand there are specialized hospitals that offer treatment programs that are more in-depth and comprehensive. These programs are very expensive and require a great deal of time that needs to be devoted to them. They do have a much greater chance of success than the other programs however.
Identifying the Problem
You need to first identify that there is a problem and how severe that problem is. You need to be on the lookout for some key signs that are indicative of a drug abuse problem. Some of these signs include a change in lifestyle level, a change in personality or a change or interest in things that they have previously enjoyed.
The Right and Wrong Ways to Perform and Intervention
You need to be careful when the time comes to perform an intervention. Failure to perform an intervention the right can lead to a worsening of problems for your loved one and could prevent them from getting the help that they need.
In-Patient vs. Out-Patient
In-Patient programs are more comprehensive and offer a better chance of success. The problem with this is the fact that the patient will need to have an extended period of time that they will be able to walk away from their life. This period can range anywhere from 28-60 days. Out-Patient and transitions programs (which start out as inpatient for a couple of weeks and then move to out-patient) are less effective and take a longer period of time and a greater degree of commitment for those involved. They are however a better choice for many who cannot take the extended period of time away from home or work, or who cannot afford to undergo the expensive in-patient programs.
Post Treatment: Taking the Steps
After your loved one has completed the treatment program they will face whole new set of challenges in their life. The first year will be among the hardest things that they will ever have had to live through. They will find themselves fighting their demon every day and will need the support of those who have been there and understand. Help them to make contact with a support organization such as Narcotic Anonymous and do everything you can to keep them on track with the group. This is the best chance that they have for long term recovery
The Rest of Their Life Drug Free, a Daily Challenge, a Daily Victory
Once they make it through the first year they will start to slowly get back to their live on their own. This does not mean that the battle is over however. The war against their addictions will never be over. They will learn to live life without drug abuse in it, but there will be time, a lot a first less as time goes on, that they will need the support of their friends and family and may need to return to their NA group. You may even find that they have relapsed and need to get a “refresher” period of treatment. This is all normal and is just part of the reality of drug abuse and treatment. The most important factor is that you must remain supportive and positive with them.
When a person is ready to begin the fight, there are options available to them. With he support and love of those who care about them and the resources available through the many treatment and recovery programs out there, a life without drug abuse is possible. Good Luck.
