Advice For Living Without Medication

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on May 27th, 2010

I would never encourage anyone who is currently on a strict regime of psychiatric medication, to give this up. Medication can be necessary and beneficial in times of crisis. However, one’s long term goal should be to live a life completely free of psychiatric intervention. This is a desirable state of affairs for a variety of reasons, some of which are presented here.

Stigma.

Everyone knows how mental health is stigmatized by the mainstream media. Here is an interesting question…how many of those London knife killings we keep hearing about are perpetrated by people who are under the care of psychiatric services? As far as I am aware, there was little mention of any mental health problem in relation to perpetrators of this spate of killings (well over 20 in about half a year).

Yet when the media gives us one report of a mentally unbalanced person who commits an act of violence, every man and his dog is fleeing for his nuclear bunker at the first sight of a full moon.

It is not in your interests to be under the long term care of psychiatric services. If you can summon the drive and energy to break free, then you put yourself into the daylight, you take control of your life and nobody can point a finger at you. The nature of our society encourages mental ill health, but society does not want to clean up after itself. It would rather throw labels around and put you in a straitjacket for the rest of your days. Do not accept this double standard. It is bad enough that society stigmatises and ridicules people with mental health problems, so the last thing you need is them dosing you up to the eyelids with chemical nastiness forever and a day.

Medication is a short term answer. The side effects of anti-psychotics and mood stabilisers can in fact be more ruinous than certain aspects of mental psychosis.

There are natural alternatives to medication.

Beating psychosis and low mood demands a commitment.

An integration of healthy activity on a DAILY basis with good nutrition and an Omega 3 and multivitamin supplement is part of the approach that you can adopt in order to break free from the need for medical intervention in your life.

Insight

Nobody likes to consider that they are unwell…but there is no shame in breakdown…Formula One Cars break down and they are supposed to be at the razor sharp edge of technical achievement. Sometimes even the best drivers will hit the dirt. A golfing genius will not win every tournament. Manchester United will sometimes get thrashed.

Life is imperfection made perfect. Once you come to terms with your psychosis, the quicker you can kill it off.

Read everything you can about your condition. This will arm you with the knowledge you need to wipe it out. Conditions of the brain are defeated by utilising the brain itself. Get your brain functioning, get it stimulated.

When you are tired and depressed, read anyway, even if it seems like the most tiresome thing in the world. Everybody has a brain. Unfortunately not everyone knows how to use it for their best advantage. If you have never heard of Neuro Linguistic programming, now is the time to check it out.

Medication is artificial and while it might offer temporary relief, those who are armed with true insight and the will to be free and independent, will find everything they need to survive out there in the natural world.

Once you give your mind and body all the breaks that it needs, everything you need to sustain life can be found in the supermarket and your health food stores.
