Using Food As Medicine (16) Fruit

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on April 24th, 2010

Fruit is consumed in its various forms by many of us, and there are even people who maintain exclusively fruit, or fruitarian diets. Some do it for religious or moral reasons, but the main appeal of fruit to many health-conscious people, is that it can help with an easy transition or even adjunct to a raw food only diet, with the inherent benefit of taste and texture appeal. Raw vegetable diets may not provide this. The opposing arguments however, of consuming only fruit will be the issues of inadequate nutrition and high sugar content. Obvious dangers exist here for diabetics. To be more specific, there will be pros and cons, such as the relatively low protein content, and lower amounts of key vitamins. and minerals. Having said that, there are well documented detox diets, which consist of fruit juice alone. Fruit diets have been associated with almost miraculous cures for many people suffering from serious health issues. If you have plans on starting a fruit only diet, consultation with a doctor is absolutely vital. There are many fruits, and their value in your diet will vary considerably.

- good for weight loss

- detox effect

- high taste sensation

- spiritual and moral benefits

Personally, I have never relied on fruit as my sole source of nutrition, rather combining it with a predominantly vegetarian diet which has a good spread of grains, legumes and green vegetables. At times I have experimented with a so-called ‘fruit only’ day for reasons of variety. On those days, which are no more frequent than once per week, I have experienced a sensation that your body is taking a bit of a break from the complicated job of digestion, along with a mild detox effect, where no meat or cooked food is consumed for a period of 24 hours. My favorites are oranges, apples, kiwi fruit, strawberries and bananas. Your personal research will be the best approach here.
