Constipated? It Could Be Your Medication
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on April 25th, 2010
Being constipated is something that almost everyone can suffer from at some time or another. Constipation occurs when stool or waste material moves too slowly through the large intestine. Feces that stay in the bowel too long before elimination become hard and dry. This results in difficult, painful, and infrequent bowel movements. In most cases, constipation is harmless. However it can lead to further health complications and more serious problems.
Many medications can cause constipation, including prescription and nonprescription drugs. The list below includes commonly prescribed drugs and common over-the-counter drugs that may promote constipation. Be aware that there are many other drugs not listed below that may cause constipation. If you notice the development of constipation with the use of a medication, this should be brought to the attention of your physician.
A list of some of the medications that can cause Constipation are:
- anti-convulsants used for epilepsy
- anti-depressants
- diuretics
- heart medications such as calcium-channel blockers
- iron supplements
- pain medications such as codeine and morphine
- some cough and cold medications containing dextromethorphan
- some antacids
Using Laxatives to treat Constipation can also have some unexpected affects because over-use of laxatives eventually makes the bowels less sensitive to the need to eliminate feces and can cause chronic constipation. The bowels become dependent on laxatives to work, and this can lead to bowel distension.
Frequently being constipated by taking certain medications can turn out to be a much bigger problem than the original problem which required you to take the medication in the first instance. This can lead to more stress and a whole host of problems that you were not expecting to encounter. It is therefore important to find a constipation remedy fast and one that works for you.
