Advantages of Omega 3 acids

In recent years extensive research has been conducted regarding the various health benefits of the omega 3 fatty acids ALA, EPA and the DHA. These n-3 and n-6 acids have been proved to benefit the development of our nervous system, immunity and brain development in young children and infants. They also provide enormous benefits to our skin rejuvenation, prevention and control of coronary heart diseases, improve metabolism and so on. However one has to remember that these are fatty acids and too much of it can affect your health adversely. The omega acids have been found to lead to clumping of platelets causing thrombosis, and the leukotriene found in these acids has been indicated in asthma and bronchial attacks. The American Medical Association has stated in its journal that claims of the omega 3 acids Fish Oil Supplements helping to cure cancer are not verified, but are more effective in prevention of malignancies.

Essential and Non Essential acids

And the omega acids are said to be most beneficial for prevention of coronary heart diseases. If one follows a vegetarian diet, it is the most helpful and beneficial to one’s health. The two essential omega oils that cannot be manufactured by our bodies and have to be included in the diet are the linolenic acid and the alpha-linolenic acid. All other essential oils can be found in other vegetarian sources and can be manufactured by our body itself. So it is not necessary to include fatty fish or fish oil supplements in your diet if you are a vegetarian. The ideal ratio of the linolenic acid LA to the alpha-linolenic acid ALA is 3:1; but a typical western diet which is full of fried foods, processed foods and saturated fats, sugar and alcohol amounts to an unhealthy ratio of 15:1. Compounding ht e problem, the western diet does not contain many fresh fruits and vegetables like a traditional vegetarian diet and so results in less minerals like magnesium, zinc and Vitamins B & C being consumed. In these less than ideal circumstances, the omega 3 acids not only help, they also prove detrimental to one’s health.

Side Effects of using Omega 3 acids

The omega n-6 acids inhibit the more beneficial n-3 acids from forming and they also block the pathway for their conversion, leading to the thickening of platelets and water retention leading to high blood pressure. No one can precisely say how much fatty acids can be safely consumed and at which rate your body is going to absorb them. As a percentage, less than 10% of your fat intake has to be ALA according to the AMA and one teaspoon of flaxseed oil can provide this. And fat found in rich green leafy vegetables contain ALA and walnuts are the best source for omega 6 oils. But remember any fat is still fat and has to be taken in moderation. So better to take a rich, nutritious and healthy vegetarian diet to prevent heart diseases than to eat lots of meat and then consume omega 3 oils to fix the problem.

Tinnitus Causes

There are many tinnitus causes. Some are common and others are inevitable, as with hearing loss and the body’s natural aging process. Some are easily remedied. If tinnitus has become a constant and serious problem, you should have a thorough hearing and ear examination. Many health conditions can cause tinnitus to increase in severity. Sometimes, no causes of tinnitus is ever found. Below are some of the more common tinnitus causes.

Aging. Many people begin to lose their acute hearing as they age. This occurrence, the medical term being presbycusis, can result in tinnitus. Pesbycusis may start around age 60.

Sinus Infection/Colds. Infections of the sinuses or ears can produce temporary tinnitus. This would naturally clear up as the body heals.

Noise Exposure. Extended exposure to very loud noises can damage one’s inner ears. Heavy equipment, jack hammers, rock concerts, chain saws, airplane engines and other extremely loud sounds are one of the common tinnitus causes. Microscopic hair-like nerve endings in the inner ear can become damaged with the result being tinnitus. For this reason, one should wear protective gear when exposed to the loud noises for long periods of time.

Ear Blockage. Something as simple as an abundance of ear wax is a common cause of tinnitus. Ear wax is a natural and healthy coating but a buildup can impair hearing and produce ear ringing or tinnitus.

Bone Changes. A hereditary condition which causes the bones in the ear to harden and change can be one of the more common tinnitus causes. The medical term for this condition is ostoclerosis.

Medication. A high dosage of aspirin or antibiotics may cause tinnitus. A side effect of some prescription drugs can cause of tinnitus. Some cancer drugs have been known to cause this, and higher doses may increase the severity of tinnitus.

Meniere’s Syndrome. This is an inner ear condition which involves the ear fluids production, pressure and composition. It often results in hearing loss, dizziness, and tinnitus.

Health. A number of health conditions can cause or worsen tinnitus. In many cases, an exact cause is never found.
Injuries. Injuring the neck or head can cause neurological disorders that affect nerves that are involved in hearing. This would be a more prominent cause in the rarer cases of tinnitus in one ear only.

Atherosclerosis. Cholesterol can build up in your veins, arteries and blood vessels anywhere in your body. When it builds up in the inner, middle, or outer ear, the vessels become less flexible which can cause a stronger flow of blood to the area, with variations in the flow. This can be a cause of tinnitus.

High Blood Pressure. High blood pressure can cause more pressure in the inner ear and cause tinnitus. Diet and exercise, and taking your physician’s recommendations for lowering your blood pressure can reduce tinnitus.
Diet. Too much caffeine, sodium or alcohol can produce the same affects as high blood pressure, in increasing pressure in the inner ear, thus causing tinnitus. A lacking of some vitamins and minerals can be linked to increased tinnitus.

Stress and Depression. Occasionally, no physical reason can be pinpointed for tinnitus. Stress and depression have been linked to tinnitus. Stress reduction exercises can help eliminate stress and depression. This, in turn, has been shown to help with tinnitus.

The key point here is tinnitus has many causes. Some causes are in fact medical and require a medical solution. Some causes are self induced and can be cured with diet and other natural cures. It is important to educate yourself on each of the known causes and then consult a physician.

Medical Marijuana Clinical Applications

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on March 24th, 2010

Medical marijuana has been the subject of many scientific and medical studies as well as being the center of many heated arguments. Although controversy still surrounds its efficacy, many are impressed with ongoing studies that demonstrate its effectiveness. Some people are against the legalization of marijuana for any reason, but others, including many in the medical community, are encouraged by its usefulness. Another name for it is medical cannabis. Marijuana comes from the hemp plant.

Some of the medicinal uses include aiding in problems related to nausea, vomiting and PMS. Lack of appetite, asthma, movement problems such as spasticity, and glaucoma all showed improvement with it, as well. Intestinal and digestive ills such as inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis were improved with the use of cannabis drug derivatives in early studies.

The list of maladies that are improved with its use has been increasing. This list of health ills helped with cannabis now includes Alzheimer’s disease, brain cancer, lung cancer, HIV/AIDS and alleviating addiction issues related to alcohol abuse and opiate dependency.

Research with Alzheimer’s disease has discovered that THC, the chemical ingredient in cannabis, is able to block the deposit of internal bodily secretions which are attributed to accelerating the progression of Alzheimer’s. THC’s presence has been shown to slow down deteriorating memory loss that is associated with this disease.

Studies that have been performed on laboratory rats and mice have shown promising results in terms of lung cancer tumors. The tumors were reported to shrink as much as 50% after being treated with THC. Brain cancer tumor studies in both mice and humans have shown favorable results with this cannabis chemical ingredient, as well.

In HIV/AIDS patients, medical marijuana was quite helpful in reduction of pain. Lack of appetite and nausea issues are common difficult side effects of the HIV/AIDS virus. These conditions were alleviated substantially after ingesting the plant.

Addicts who were weaning off alcohol and opiates were able to ease their discomfort by ingesting it. Anxiety and bi-polar disorder also may be helped in some cases.

Many more studies are ongoing in order to learn about its clinical applications. Thirteen states have approved the use of this drug and more are investigating whether this would be a viable option. Although many people are in favor, there are multitudes that are dead set against its legalization. What many don’t realize is that cannabis as a medication has been around for eons.
