Erythropoietin - What is This Material?

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on February 04th, 2010

Erythropoietin is a glycoprotein hormone, and is also produced as a biomedicine. It is often referred to by a selection of different names, such as hemopoietin, hematopoietin, and erythropoetin. A short name for it is EPO. When the exogenous form is used as a performance enhancer, it is considered as an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent, or ESA for short.

The human body uses this material in a process called erythropoiesis, in which the production of red blood cells occurs. It is also used by the body in additional functions. As a cytokine, erythropoietin is secreted by cells in the immune system, and it can take a signal from a certain cell to another. Wound healing also involves this substance. The brain’s response to a neuronal injury, and also the regulation of red blood cell production, are other functions that also use it.

As a biomedicine, erythropoietin is produced by some companies in the medical or pharmaceutical industries. It is sold under different trade names depending upon which company is involved in the production. One of its medical uses is in treating individuals who have stage 5 chronic kidney disease (requiring dialysis). In such a case, EPO is given along with iron. It is also used at times for treatments involving other medical conditions. Please keep in mind that this information is not professional medical advice, and should not be used as a substitute for it. A medical professional involved in the case, looking at the circumstances, may be able to make a decision as to whether erythropoietin should be considered as a treatment option in that particular situation.

Using Food As Medicine (10) - Rice

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on February 04th, 2010

Consumed by millions, found everywhere, rice has been underestimated by some as a prime health food. The health and medicinal qualities of rice are very impressive, especially so for the least processed varieties.

- anti-carcinogenic qualities

- good for weight loss

- source of B vitamins

- natural fiber source

There some reports suggesting that rice is even able to reverse the effects of thickening of the arteries or arteriosclerosis. Like many of the foods we have talked about, rice can be served on it’s own as well as being part of a multitude of vegetarian or even non-vegetarian recipes. I have had boiled rice with just light soy sauce as an example.

You can of course, add the seasoning of your choice. Just try to use low fat and low salt flavorings. This is one of the easy foodstuffs to keep your portion serves under control. In other words, rice can be very filling. Of late, I have been substituting parboiled rice which has most of the powerful nutrients and fiber of brown rice, but does not take anywhere near as long to prepare. I would tend to discount white rice, as the process involved strips much of the vitamins and the fiber that brown rice has. Think how white bread compares to wholemeal varieties and you get the picture. In a future article we will explore other grains that will even match rice as a healthy staple food, to both maintain healthy body-weight and help with weight loss programs.

Be wise when making changes to your diet. Do your research and ask your doctor’s opinion.

Prescription Recalls

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on February 04th, 2010

When you seek medical assistance for an ailment or illness, you trust that your doctor will diagnose your condition accurately and provide you with a safe and effective remedy; however, this is not always the case. While most doctors do the best they can, they are oftentimes misled by the pharmaceutical industry. With the increase in drugs available on the market, it is inevitable that some of them wind up unsafe for public use. When this occurs, a prescription recall is enacted.

Recalls

The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for administering pharmaceutical recalls. In recent years, America’s pharmaceutical industry is approving more drugs than ever before. While the clinical trial period for newly approved drugs is designed to ensure that they are safe for public use, there are often unexpected side-effects that occur post-approval. When this happens, the FDA must administer a recall of the drug and test any patients who believe they may be suffering from its harmful side-effects.

Product Liability

Regardless of the type of product, whether it is an anti-depressant or a children’s toy, if it is deemed unsafe for public use, it is immediately recalled in order to prevent further injury. Unfortunately, however, there are inevitably a number of people who sustain injury or harm because of its brief time on the market. For those individuals, the industry which issued the product may be held liable for damages incurred because of the defective product.

Compensation for injuries varies depending on the severity of the case. In extreme instances where wrongful death occurs, the family members may be entitled a significant amount of money. If you or someone you know has been victimized by a defective product, it is important that you are represented by someone who will gain you the justice you deserve.

What to do If Your Prescription Is Recalled

In the event that a prescription drug you are taking has been recalled, you should immediately:

? Stop taking the drug

? Contact your primary healthcare provider

? Get examined to make sure you are not experiencing any harmful side effects of the drug

? Consult a product liability attorney if you believe you have sustained injury

In some cases, the manufacturer of the drug may request that patients return the drug to ensure that it is properly disposed of. If this is not requested, it is still recommended that you return the drug to the pharmacy so that they can properly dispose of it.
