Many of our the customers we treat on a day to day use the teeth whitening treatment as the kick start to give up smoking.

Smoking is one of the worst things that we consume on a day to day basis that stains our teeth changing them to a yellowish or brownish colour over a period of time. Typically smokers will have slightly darker teeth in the middle than the teeth located to the sides as these are the teeth that absorb the nicotine and change the colour.

Having a whitening treatment can involve purchasing home kit, a laser or zoom treatment or having the trays made at the dentist so smokers have plenty of choice.

Home kits
The most affordable way to whiten these days with the internet supplying a massive choice of trays or strips at fairly low cost per usage. Home kits are normally low strength and therefore for deep or stubborn staining home kits are normally not that effective. However for many smokers home kits can be worth trying. If used regularly then eventually you will notice a change to the colouration and deep staining will start to remove. These kits are worth using as a maintenance in between a laser treatment as you then get the best scenario of instant whiteness and a low cost, time efficient way of keeping the staining away.

Laser or Zoom whitening
This is becoming one of the most popular ways to whiten the teeth because it only takes one hour to perform the treatment and therefore minimises the hassle factor. Laser whitening involves placing a gel on to the surface of the teeth and the light activates the gel and increase the speed of the whitening process, without the laser the teeth would still whiten but much slower and less effectively.

Tray based bleaching
The dentist will make the trays to suit the mouth and then the customers will use the trays for fourteen consecutive days. Normally this involves sleeping in the trays overnight and during the treatment it is best to stay away from anything likely to re-stain the teeth easily. This system requires dedication and not everyone is comfortable sleeping with the trays in their mouth. For deeper staining the trays are very effective and once you have purchased the trays the ongoing maintenance is also a consideration. For example using the trays once every six to eight weeks will ensure the staining is kept at bay and this will keep the look of the teeth as white as possible.

Whatever way you decide to approach using teeth whitening to give up smoking there is plenty of information on the web to help you make the right decision. Obviously budget plays a part to play but also people should think about the longer term management when deciding the best solution.

Ring a few companies and get some advice from your dentist is the best way to approach this and whatever you decide good luck with your whitening adventure and giving up smoking!

General Information About Antibiotics

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on February 16th, 2010

Antibiotic is an agent that weakens or destroys bacteria; antibiotics are medically used to treat various types of bacterial infections. The various types of antibiotics work either by preventing an infection from growing or by destroying an existing infection. Antibiotics are produced either from a mold or a fungus or are produced synthetically.

Question: What are the various types of antibiotics and what do they do?

Common forms of antibiotics include aminoglycosides, macrolides, penicillins, tetracyclines, and cephalosporins.

Aminoglycosides work by interfering with the protein formation of bacteria. Aminoglycosides include gentamicin, amikacin, and tobramycin. Side effects can include damage to the nerves of hearing and balance, as well as kidney injury.

Macrolide antibiotics interfere with the protein formation of bacteria during multiplication. Erythromycin is a macrolide. Side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort.

Penicillins (discovered by Sir Alexannder Fleming in 1928) work by damaging the cell walls of the invading bacteria as the bacteria reproduce. Penicillin G and V are widely used for streptococcal and other bacterial infections. Broad-spectrum penicillins, such as ampicillin and amoxicillin, are used on a variety of infections caused by gram-negative organisms. Hypersensitivity reactions, for example, a fever or a rash, are fairly common side effects of penicillin use. Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) rarely occur, but can be life-threatening.

Tetracyclines, which are active against a wide range of bacteria and other organisms, are thought to prevent production of proteins in the invading bacterial cells. The tetracyclines include tetracycline and doxycycline. Side effects of therapy may include gastrointestinal irritation, sensitivity of the skin to sunlight, and liver and kidney injury. This group of drugs should not be administered during the last four to five months of pregnancy, nor should it be given to children before the age of eight years. Permanent discoloration of developing teeth may result.

Cephalosporins are relatively new antibiotics active against a wide range of bacteria. Like penicillins, they interfere with bacterial cell wall formation. A frequently used cephalosporin is cefaclor. Side effects include rashes and fever. Sometimes, persons allergic to penicillins will also be allergic to cephalosporins.

Question: Should antibiotics be used to fight all infections?

Antibiotics can safely save lives when prescribed appropriately. However, indiscriminate use of these drugs can have serious consequences and can counteract their usefulness. A number of bacterial strains that cause disease have become resistant to the antibiotics that were once able to control or destroy them.

Although literally thousands of antibiotic substances have been found in nature or have been produced chemically, relatively few have been proven safe and effective. Certain antibiotics can become toxic when outdated.

Persons who know they are allergic to an antibiotic drug should tell the physician before being treated for any condition. An allergic reaction could lead to anaphylactic shock, which can be life-threatening. Even a lesser reaction can be quite serious and should be monitored by a physician.

The 5 Worst Prescription Pharmaceutical Drugs

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on February 15th, 2010

Do you have a prescription for a certain medical condition You are one of the many then. In fact over 50% of Americans take at least one type of prescription drug regularly and staggeringly over 80% of Americans take some kind of pharmaceutical drug, like Tylenol, on a regular basis. However, as unbelievable as this may seem, there are some prescriptions that should have been scrapped from inception, some that we have a hard time believing the FDA actually approved. Are you taking one of them

The first worst prescription pharmaceutical drugs are Vicodin and Oxycontin. These are listed here not because they have the worst side effects, but because they are the most freely available and the most abused. In fact, Vicodin and Oxycotin account for more deaths than ALL of the illegal drugs, like cocaine, meth, heroin, LSD, etc., combined. The reason is because alcohol should never be mixed with either Vicodin or Oxycontin. Yet almost all of those who abuse these drugs combine them with alcohol. The amount of pills taken should not be more than 1 or 2 at a time. There are those who will take 4 or more pills at a time. Combine those 4 pills with alcohol and you have a recipe for disaster.

There are certain ratings used by research facilities which rate drugs based on their benefit versus risk ratios. What is difficult to understand is why there are certain drugs that are rated as “worst drugs” meaning that there is very little benefit and very high risk, yet some of them are still approved by the FDA. The drug Vioxx, an arthritis pain relief medication, was recently removed from the market. People who took Vioxx had a significantly higher risk for heart attacks, or perhaps better said is a bunch of people died from it. It is one of several banned pharmacy drugs, most of these being weight loss drugs. The FDA has banned these drugs, however they can still be illegally acquired online.

Third we will cover the drugs with the worst side effects. For example a drug that the FDA has approved and it is still on the market is called Mirapex, which is used to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Many people who take this drug develop amnesia. Amnesia is also common among those that take cholesterol drugs. As one man relates, Duane Graveline, a former astronaut, reported coming back from a short walk and not recognizing his wife while he was taking Lipitor. Then he lost memory of any events beyond his high school graduation. One drug that is designed to help deal with menopause symptoms is called EvaMist. However its side effects include cancer, stroke, heart attack, blood clots, and even dementia! How bad does your menopause have to be for you to be willing to take those kinds of risks Chantix, a drug used to help quit smoking, causes people to commit suicide. Lariam is a drug given to soldiers and tourists to help stop the spread of Malaria but often time will cause those who take it to have intense hallucinations and psychotic behavior. Many who take Plavix, a medicine that is supposed to help prevent heart attacks, vomit blood as a side effect. How is it that the FDA deems these drugs as acceptable to be used by the public

Fourth we will cover the worst drugs that are now so common that we stop to consider how horrible it is for you, for example, Prozac. Depression has become such a commonplace illness and the conventional pharmaceutical drugs used to treat them so publicized, that when we hear them mentioned we assume that they are reasonably safe. This is far from the truth. The side effects of Prozac are insomnia, nausea, weakness, headache, diarrhea, loss of appetite, drowsiness, anxiety, nervousness, shakiness, dry mouth, decreased sex drive, yawning, indigestion, dizziness, sweating, impotence, ejaculation problems, flushing (redness of the skin, especially the face), abnormal dreams, constipation, gas, vomiting, fever or chills, weight loss, vision changes, chest pain, high blood pressure (hypertension), increased appetite and weight gain and taste changes. Many who take Prozac will experience many of these side effects. However more than all of these combined is the way that Prozac affects the person’s mind. The person becomes, probably most accurately described as, a zombie.

The fifth worst drugs are the ones that are the most addictive. Vicodin and OxyContin again make the list, perhaps this is part of the reason for why so many deaths have resulted from taking these drugs. In spite of these facts the FDA still rules these drugs as being ok. What difference is there in weed and other drugs from Vicodin Perhaps only because those in charge cannot control the production of illegal drugs where as Vicodin they do control, meaning all of the profit goes to them Drugs like Demerol, Percocet*, Darvocet, Ritalin** and any amphetamine, are all extremely addictive and are the drugs most pushed on the black market to our kids at their schools. Do you not remember Jr High How important was peer pressure to you then We all had to fit in. What if your 13 year old daughter is peer pressured into taking this thing that will destroy her life

So is there an alternative to these evils Is there anyway we can stop this I do not know how to stop this but I know that there are alternatives. There are alternative methods to treating the problems of many of the illnesses that these drugs treat. As far as your 13 year old daughter, my best advice is you talk to her tell her that you know about these drugs and how bad they are for her.

* Also commonly causes death

** Also causes serious mental side-effects

Higher Doses of Antibiotic For the Obese

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on February 15th, 2010

Recent reports indicate that patients larger in size may need higher doses of antibiotics instead of the regular dose. The ‘one size fits all’ idea for prescribing medicine may not treat infection in obese people and only develop more resistance in the body. One of The Lancet’s narrative review brought this concern into light. The review discussed several pressing issues about drug treatments. Authors of the review indicated the need for proportional prescriptions. Simply, authors proposed the prescription of drugs and doses according to the person’s body weight. The same way is used in prescribing drugs to children.

It was raised that when drug doses and prescriptions are relative to the patient’s body weight, it will be more advantageous for the condition of the patient. It was also noted that comparative prescription may make it easier to fight diseases in general. The major concern in this matter is the build up of microbes that are resistant to antivirals, antibiotics, or antifungals. Given that individual prescription can help avert resistance, then healthcare professionals should consider this method.

However, changing existing prescribing practice will have significant implications in practice and cost. These factors should be carefully considered. There is a need to further conduct trials before implementing the proposed method in a wider scale. The results of trials will determine if the benefits outweighs the costs and implications of changing current practice.

Discussion points of the proposal

The authors of the review indicate that even though pharmacokinetic studies (studies about drug processes and distribution) take into consideration age differences and variations of the disease, it is important to consider other characteristics such as body size.

The physiological alterations observed in the body like increased adipose (fat) tissue, tend to influence metabolism, distribution, as well as clearance of drugs in the body. More specifically, there should be careful consideration to hydrophilic (’water-loving’) as well as lipophilic (’fat-loving’) drugs. The distribution of these two drugs differs for lean and obese individuals. The size of the person’s body can also influence kidney and liver functions. These functions affect the clearance of drugs in the body.

Available data confirm the prescribing according to body size helps achieve desired outcomes in the body. Nonetheless, further research is still needed to fully verify the effects of comparative prescription as opposed to current practices. Successful clinical trials are needed to determine the extent of the method’s effects.

Citrus Interactions - What You Need to Know

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on February 15th, 2010

Everyone knows we need to increase our consumption of fruits and vegetables. They’re healthy, right? Why would something is common as an orange be a major problem for some people?

The answer is called an interaction. Some foods will have negative interactions with some medications. Some of the problems caused are minor and others are potentially deadly. Do you take a medication that could cause a problem?

The first introduction I had to the idea that citrus fruit could cause problems with prescriptions was when my husband had to start taking several medications for a serious heart problem. Grapefruit was the problem citrus family member.

Eating grapefruit or drinking the juice can interact with several medications. Not all of these medications are heart drugs. The list includes antidepressants, anti-seizure medications, immunosuppressants and statins. In fact, at least 50 medications have some sort of interaction with grapefruit.

The interaction is one of two types. It either doesn’t break down fast enough and there is too much medicine in your blood for too long, or it breaks down too fast.

Grapefruits aren’t the only citrus fruits with interaction problems. Oranges…both sweet and bitter…also interact. Bitter oranges tend to interact in the same way as grapefruit. Sweet oranges have the same potential, with a few additions. Some antibiotics and medicines that act on the pump found in cells may also interact.

If you take any medications for a chronic condition, it is a good idea to sit down with your medication list and look up information from a reliable source about interactions. Citrus fruits are not the only potential pit falls in your diet. The same holds true for herbal supplements. Either look them up or ask your pharmacist if they can be a problem for you.

Today’s medical needs include safe methods of storage for items such as blood and various tissue samples for testing purposes. These must be handled antiseptically as well as stored in specific temperatures. For these and other reasons, they cannot simply be stored in a typical residential freezer or refrigerator. The medical material, whether it be blood samples, or tissue as in pap smear results, need to be stored needs a controlled environment where they will be saved for some future purpose, and this medical refrigeration equipment needs to be securely locked to prevent any malicious contamination or theft.

Medical clinics such as private doctor’s offices often have nothing more than a residential grade refrigerator to keep tissue samples taken from patients, but they generally do not hold them for more than a few hours while awaiting transportation to a hospital or lab. There are biological standards by which all such materials must be handled and stored in order to assure the safety and the quality of any medical related materials.

For controlled purposes there are various classifications of storage, generally classified by temperature and or humidity within a secure controlled environment:

  • Environmental control involves precise control of both temperature and humidity for long term preservation of collectible materials. This may involve stainless steel walls and ducting, allowing circulation of temperature controlled air. Generally a dry environment ideal for computer media storage.
  • Preventative conservation storage insures dust free, temperature controlled, secure storage for items ranging from collectibles to medical tissue samples to blood.
  • Stability storage may include walk in size storage containers such as freezers and refrigerated areas that require temperature control, meant for long term storage of items such as blood plasma and body tissue, pharmaceutical supplies, or quarantined materials.
  • Moderate or ambient temperature storage generally has moderate temperature control in the range of sixty degrees centigrade down to negative two degrees centigrade. Many pharmaceutical items, solvents, dry materials, nasal sprays, tablets and capsules will store well at this medical refrigeration grade temperature.
  • Low temp storage from negative two degrees centigrade down to around negative sixty degrees centigrade considered ideal for food products such as meat, nitrate film, toxins, and pharmaceuticals. Humidity can be controlled variably.
  • Ultra low temps from negative sixty degrees centigrade to negative eighty six degrees centigrade prove ideal for reagents, biological supplies, and tissue specimens.
  • Vapor phase nitrogen and cryogenic temperatures from negative one hundred fifty degrees centigrade to negative one hundred ninety six degrees centigrade is ideal for preservation of bone marrow, stem cells, and biological and tissue samples.

These controlled storage facilities are secured by locking devices and have the assurance of back up systems to guarantee that the temperature remains at the designated controlled level. There is need for back up systems which include additional storage capacity such as additional freezers and medical refrigeration equipment whenever the substances to be stored are critical to human life and there is a need to preserve the items for long periods of time.

Understanding ELISA Kits

Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on February 14th, 2010

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is a biochemical procedure in immunology that is primarily used for determining the presence of an antigen or an antibody in a sample. For years, ELISA has been utilized as a diagnostic tool in plant pathology and medicine. It has test kits that are used for cancer, autoimmune diseases, fertility, thyroid, steroid, infectious diseases and parasitology, allergy, and diabetes assays.

One of the ELISA test kits for cancer is Prostatic Acid Phosphatase (PAP), which is used for measuring the prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) in the serum and plasma of a human. The components of the kit are designed for use as an integral unit only. Therefore, the components from various lots must be separated. The Diagnostic Automation PSA Enzyme Immunoassay is also a test kit for cancer. It is especially designed for quantitative detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the human serum.

Another example of test kit is the Human Allergen Specific IgE ELISA Assay, which is used to quantitate and qualitate the allergen specific human Immunoglobulin E. The total IgE of the specimen is determined before performing allergen specific IgE assays. The Human Growth Hormone (HGH), another type of test kit is used for testing the fertility of a woman. It determines the human growth hormone concentration within the human serum.

There are also test kits for infectious diseases and one of these is the Bordetella pertussis IgA, which is intended to be used for determining the specific IgA antibodies against the Bordetella pertussis in the plasma and serum. The assay is designed for in-vitro diagnostic test only. Therefore, further tests need to be taken into account.

There are several manufacturers of ELISA kits and one of these is Shanghai PZ Bio-tech Co., Ltd. in China. Another ELISA Kit Manufacturer is Taiwan Advance Bio-Pharm Inc., which is based in Taiwan. Other manufacturers of ELISA kits is the Wuhan Boster Biological Technology, Ltd. (China), Green House Pharm Pte Ltd (Singapore), and Biocare Diagnostics Limited (China).

Hemorrhoids, also known as piles or emerods, is a rather common ailment that often affects people who lead a sedentary or inactive life, such as those who work desk jobs and rarely go out for exercise. This is the inflammation or swelling of the veins in the anus and rectum. Actually, the term “hemorrhoids,” if taken in the technical sense, really refers to cushions made of tissue that are filled with blood vessels where the rectum and anus connects. However, the term is loosely used to refer to any varicosities in the anal region.

There are so many possible causes for developing hemorrhoids, and there are as many medications given to treat the problem. However, did you know that you could go all-natural when treating hemorrhoids by trying herbal treatments? Three herbs that you can try for hemorrhoids are horsetail, blueberries and ceanothus.

Why Should You Go For Herbal Treatments?

The reason why you should try herbal treatments when dealing with hemorrhoids – or any other ailment for that matter – is because they are safer and don’t have the side effects associated with regular medicines. In addition, most medicines can usually target only one ailment at a time while herbs can frequently improve your over-all health while dealing with your complaint.

How Do You Use The Herbs?

If you’re having trouble with hemorrhoids, you should try the three herbs mentioned earlier. Horsetail is the term used for a group of branched species (with scientific name Equisetum) which looks like a horse’s tail. It is the only living genus in a plant family made of vascular plants which reproduce not by seeds but by spores.

Horsetail

You can use horsetail to deal with bleeding hemorrhoids by boiling a tablespoon of horsetail in a liter of purified water for five minutes. Drink a cup of the boiled concoction before every meal. If you want, you can stir in some lemon juice to improve the taste. The bleeding should lessen and completely stop within three days.

Blueberries

On the other hand, blueberries are plants that flower and bloom into small round fruits that are sweet when ripe, with a hint of acidity. They are quite effective in treating hemorrhoids, and quite a tasty treat as well. In addition, they are easily available in the market. You can even choose from different variety such as low-bush blueberries, high-bush blueberries, rabbit-eye blueberries or half-high blueberries.

If you’re having trouble with hemorrhoids, eat a cup of fresh blueberries every day for the next two months. If you’re having difficulty finishing it up in one go, you can divide the cup into two or three servings in such a way that you’ll be having fresh blueberries for dessert after every meal. The symptoms should begin to reduce in two months.

Ceanothus

You can also try ceanothus, which is a shrub or small tree usually found in North America. Just boil ten to fifteen ceanothus leaves in a cup of purified water. Strain and drink like a tea every day for seven days. You should notice the hemorrhoids getting smaller within one week.

Best Anti Snoring Device - How Much Can You Pay For A Good Night’s Sleep ?

The big question being asked today by millions; What is the best Anti Snoring Device on the market today? With millions of people around the world that are affected by snoring, many of them would like to know the answer to this question, not only those who snore at night, but more especially those who sleep with someone who snores. So what is the best Anti Snoring Device? This article will discuss the best three Anti Snoring Devices on the market today starting with the third on the list.

How Anti Snoring Devices Work

Anti snoring devices are devices that eliminate or stop snoring. Noises caused by the vibration of the soft tissues in the throat. The more noise, implies the more the obstruction in the throat. Snoring affects nearly half the adult population with more males affected than females.

Snoring research shows that a jaw supporter, which keeps the lower jaw in an upward position increases remarkably the three dimensional space in the airway, thus reducing air velocity and soft tissue vibration. This action can eliminate or substantially reduce snoring. Other anti snore remedies could be;

Anti Snoring Device - Surgery

Although this is not really an Anti Snoring Device but rather a procedure, it still cures snoring. With surgery, a surgeon identify the problem leading to the snoring and may remove tonsils, adenoids, or any excess tissue at the back of the throat or inside of the nose. The surgeon may even go as far as reconstructing the jaw to expand the upper airway, by so doing, help stop the snoring. The problem with this form of Anti Snoring Device or procedure is that, although it may work for some people, it still carries the normal risks and complications associated with all surgeries carry. This is the least favored form of Anti Snoring Device or procedure for most people.

Anti Snoring Device - CPAP Machine

A CPAP machine otherwise known as Continuous positive airway pressure machine is a Anti Snoring Device that works for most people. A CPAP machine provides the snorer with pressurized air into their lungs which prevents their airways from collapsing and causing them to snore. There are usually two main drawbacks to using a CPAP machine. The first is definitely the cost. A CPAP device cost up to $1000 or more which is quite expensive for most people. The second fact is the potential discomfort it can cause to the person that wears the mask.

The Best Anti Snoring Device - Sleeping Jaw Supporter

The very best form of Anti Snoring Device, is to use a Sleeping Jaw Supporter. Snoring research has shown that a Sleeping Jaw Supporter, keeps the lower jaw in an upward position and increases the three dimensional space in the airway, this reduces air velocity and soft tissue vibration. These actions can eliminate or substantially reduce snoring. This is the most cost-effective form of Anti Snoring Device on the market today that can effectively help you stop snoring. It si not only very affordable but it has been proven to work for a lot more people than any anti snoring device out there in the market. An example of this device can be found at;
