TV Drug Ads - Prescription Drugs #1 Cause of Medical Disability, Death
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on September 01st, 2009
Prescription drugs killed 106,000 in hospitals from adverse drug reaction (”properly prescribed and administered”) making these a leading cause of death. Journal American Medical Assoc, 4-15-1998.
Prescription drugs killed 199,000 outpatients. Western Journal of Medicine, June, 2000, p 391. These reports support 305,000 people per year dying from drugs “properly prescribed,” circa 1998. “1998-2005…fatal adverse drug events increased 2.7 fold.” Archives of Internal Medicine, 9-10-2007. Multiplying 305,000 deaths in 1998 by 2.7, 824,000 drug deaths/yr in 2005 exceeds heart disease.
Prescription drugs caused “116 million extra visits to a physician per year, 76 million additional prescriptions a year, 17 million emergency department visits, 8 million admissions to hospitals, 3 million admissions to long-term care facilities [ruined for life]…The total cost was estimated to be $76.6 billion, rivaling the aggregate cost of…diabetes.” Western Journal of Medicine, June, 2000.
“1998-2005…serious adverse drug events increased 2.6 fold.” Archives Internal Medicine, 9-10-2007.
Multiplying the data above (1998) by 2.6, we got 302 million extra visits to a doctor, 198 million more prescriptions, 44 millions emergency department visits, 21 million admissions to long term care, all at a cost of $200 billion for 2005.
Only congress understands such figures, or should, because they approved the TV drug ads in 1997 that led to the 2.7 increase in death (824,000 in 2005) and the 2.6 increase in visits to doctors and emergency departments, admissions to hospitals and long-term care facilities, and the $200 billion in cost.
Congress bears responsibility for enabling the drug companies to deceive this nation as they have done. The Truth About the Drug Companies; How They Deceive Us by Marcia Angell, MD, former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, now teaching at Harvard, should be required reading for congress. She told 60 Minutes that drug companies spend $400 million/year contributing to re-election campaigns for congressmen and lobbying them. Thanking them, congress approved the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan and now they want “Healthcare Reform” to expand drug coverage to all Americans. Like a smoker, drinker or glutton, we are doing it all to ourselves. Why should taxes pay for someone’s choice to smoke or drink? We are drugging America to death as we ignore personal responsibility and the media sponsored by the pharmaceutical companies, makes health practitioners who encourage supplements to look like quacks as SWAT teams destroy their offices.
Free Healthcare Medicine - High Risk and Expensive

Heart Disease, Blood Pressure, Diabetes, even Cancer may be reversible.
Medical care is the diagnosis and treatment of disease. It includes prescription drugs and surgery and it has little to do with healthcare. Most of us were born “healthy” but after 30, 40, or 50 years of eating, drinking and doing as we please, we think the TV offer of drugs, just “Ask your doctor,” is what we need. It works well initially, but sooner or later, we become toxic to the chemical and think we need another prescription for our “headache, diarrhea or abdominal pain” when we really need one less drug, not one more. If we take a 2nd drug to relieve the symptoms caused by the first drug, we are now on a slippery slope that will take us down fast. Few people would guess from the evening news sponsored by the drug companies that adverse drug reactions have surpassed heart disease and cancer as the leading cause of premature death–death before age 75. Journal of American Medical Association, 4-15-1998; Western Journal of Medicine, June, 2000.
Those deaths made medical care the #3 cause of death in 2000, but deaths increased 2.7-fold from 1998-2005 as reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine, Sept 10, 2007. The authors had no idea what caused the increase. I don’t think anyone suggested to them that 1998 was the first full year that drug ads appeared on TV, thanks to drug lobbies congress, spending $400 million/year, according to Marcia Angell, MD on 60 Minutes.
By contrast, healthcare is what we do for ourselves. An acronym helps remember the ingredients: NEW START includes Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Air, Rest and Trust in Nature and nature’s God. None of the above ingredients has any significant cost except food, but healthy food often costs less than the fancy packages with an ingredients list that you wonder what is in it. As Dr. Lorraine Day said, “Don’t read labels, don’t eat any food with a label on it!” (Cured her metastatic breast cancer with the NEW START program and raw vegetable juices. The source for the NEW START concept is my favorite book (resource box below)
I’ve spent days in the U.S. Senate building. One senator told me, “You are wasting your time. They [pharmaceutic companies] own us” [by contributions to reelection campaigns]. Government needs to see that every country practicing western medicine is on the brink of bankruptcy. “Healthcare” falsely so-called for GM retirees was what broke General Motors’ back. People need to take responsibility for themselves. Why should my taxes pay for the high medical costs of a smoker or drinker or glutton? Let them bear the responsibility of their own actions. Paying for an alcoholic’s expenses just confirms them in their addiction. This is just an example that applies to healthcare generally. Exceptions include accidents when the injured was not at fault and has no funds.
