Natural Macular Degeneration Treatment Options
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on July 23rd, 2009
Macular Degeneration occurs when there is damage to the retina. This disease is called Macular Degeneration because the part of the retina that is damaged is the macula which controls the central field of vision. As a result, those affected by this disease typically have difficultly seeing in the central part of their visual field. The onset of this disease can lead to a variety of problems including the potential for blindness if the disease is not controlled. Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment which can reverse the effects of this disease. As a consequence, Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in developed nations.
However, while there may not be a way to reverse the effects of this disease, there are ways to help prevent it from progressing, as well as ways to help those affected improve their overall vision. One of the safest and easiest ways to prevent the progression of Macular Degeneration is to take a daily supplement. Although, it should be noted that not all vision-related supplements are created equal. It is important to research each product to ensure it contains key ingredients such as Folic Acid. This is because ingredients like Folic Acid have been proven to help improve vision. It is also important that the supplement contain a variety of vitamins and minerals to ensure that the body is able to prevent the progression of the disease by improving the immune system while specifically targeting the root of the problem.
Wet vs. Dry Macular Degeneration
There are two types of this disease: wet and dry. The dry form of the disease is considered to be the less serious version and is typically suppressed through a daily supplement. The wet form of the disease, on the other hand, is rarer, but is also more serious. For example, while only ten percent of those affected by Macular Degeneration have the wet form, they account for ninety percent of cases that result in blindness. The wet form of this disease may require additional treatments such as laser surgery. However, while this procedure has been shown to sustain vision in the long run, in the short term it generally results in an increased loss of vision due to the fact that the laser damages part of the eye.
Choosing an Effective Natural Macular Degeneration Treatment
The first thing you should do when researching natural treatments is to study their list of ingredients to ensure you are not allergic to any specific ingredient. If the company does not list their ingredients, it may be in your best interest to avoid purchasing the product.
The second variable you need to look at is what others are saying about the product. Take the time to read the reviews and testimonials to ensure that the treatment actually delivers on its promise.
Remember that you can not cure Macular Degeneration; you can only slow its progression. While this is a common disease especially for those over the age of 50, it is vital that you take it very seriously as a failure to do so may result in the increased progression of the disease and the potential for blindness.
