One of the non stimulating drugs for treatment of ADHD is Atomoxetine. This drug was originally supposed to be an antidepressant. It is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor sold under the brand name Strattera and is prescribed for people who can not tolerate amphetamine based drugs. This drug must be taken for 1-1/2 to 2 months before you’ll even know if it will be effective or not.

Even though this drug is considered one of the non stimulating drugs for the treatment of ADHD, the side effects are similar to amphetamines, such as dry mouth, insomnia, nausea, loss of appetite, increase in heart rate and others. One long term side effect for teenagers is a mild depression, or the problem of suicidal or abnormal psychotic thoughts such as paranoia. For a majority of parents this is unacceptable.

Other Alternatives for Non Stimulating Drugs for ADHD

Listed here are some truly non stimulating drugs for ADHD. The botanical extracts that are helping many parents control and manage their child’s ADHD without prescription medications.
