Statins Problems
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on June 04th, 2009
This medication was introduced in 1987 as a treatment for high cholesterol but unfortunately for the pharmaceutical companies, the reporting of statins problems grows in proportion to their use.
There are now about 30 million people who regularly take this medication and the number is increasing rapidly. The pharmaceutical companies have declared that they expect 50% of the U.S. population to be using this medication in the future.
So what are the problems associated with the use of these drugs?
The most widely reported side effect seems to be the effect on muscles - pain, numbness and weakness. This in itself, seems to be a side effect of the real problem that statins interfere with the mitochondria, the body’s energy-producing cells.
Impairing mitochondrial function can also lead to problems with high blood pressure and diabetes so people suffering from these ailments already are more prone to risk.
One of the greatest problems is that the side effects of drugs often do not appear for a long time after the patient starts taking the drug. Also, many patients are elderly and they are unsure, if they suffer side effects, if they are due to the drug or just old age.
After some time, when side effect become apparent, they are often diagnosed as a separate health problem requiring further medication and not a problem caused by the original drug.
Some other problems that seem to be associated with the use of statins are:
Frequent fevers
Anemia
Cataracts
Sexual dysfunction
Acidosis
All drugs seem to have side effects, some more than others and it patients should be aware of them and measure any proposed advantages of the drug against possible harm.
