Can Medication Really Change the Way You Feel?
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine on June 09th, 2009
Feelings are something which everyone has. Sometimes we feel good, and sometimes we feel bad, but what exactly do these feelings mean and why do we have them? This question is one very few people ask themselves, and rather than thinking about why they are feeling a certain way, most people will simply try to get on with things as best they can and accept that’s just the way things are.
Unfortunately, in today’s society one of the most common types of feelings people have are bad feelings. Since these are uncomfortable and unpleasant to experience, most people naturally try to ignore them or hide from them, so that they can avoid having to experience them.
One of the easiest ways to do this is with medication, and as a result sales for medications such as Prozac have sky rocketed over the past decade, causing more and more people to try and escape the way they are feeling.
Of course nobody likes to feel depressed so it is a natural reaction (and one that should be expected) for a person to want to escape from it. However it is important to remember that with any medication you take, it only addresses the symptoms rather than the cause. This is an important distinction to make, and one that will ultimately determine whether the treatment you are taking will benefit you in the long run or not.
For example, let’s suppose a person is feeling depressed because they are lonely and have no friends. So to escape these painful feelings, they go to their doctor, tell them they are depressed and ask for some medication to help them.
After a few weeks or months this person may appear to be feeling better, but what has actually changed in their life? The medication they took isn’t going to make them any friends by itself, it can only assist them by making them feel that they are able to go out and meet new people.
So if this person doesn’t make an effort to meet anyone, they will remain lonely and so in the long run they will continue to feel more and more depressed. The medication they took only helped to delay the painful emotions they were experiencing.
If however they decide to go out and make new friends because their medication has given them the confidence to do so, then they would benefit from this treatment as it is helping them to address the root cause of their depression.
So however you are feeling, and whatever medication you are taking, it is important to realise that just because you swallow a few tablets in the morning it doesn’t mean your life is going to suddenly change. That is up to you, and the only way you can do it is by listening to your feelings and responding appropriately to them.
