ADHD Treatment Efficacy - What Criteria Can We Use?
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 04th, 2009
It’s unbelievable but the drugs companies are still raking in handsome profits for ADHD drugs, even when there is a recession which will take 80 years to recover from. Adderall XR provided a lot more revenue for the pharmaceutical company manufacturing it - in fact revenue shot up by 16.5% in the last quarter. Prescriptions for Vyvanse, another popular ADHD drug, rose by 102% this quarter compared to 2008. If we were to judge ADHD treatment efficacy just by the sheer profits they are generating, we might be fooled into thinking that these psychostimulant drugs must be the ideal cure for ADHD !
Nothing could be further from the truth, believe me. Let us throw the profit criteria out of the window as there are too many conflicts of interest there. It seems that certain aspects of the Hippocratic oath have been conveniently forgotten by some doctors when judging or deciding on the efficacy of treatments for ADHD. What about safety as a criterion for ADHD treatment efficacy?
Ritalin has not much of a safety record as it has caused some deaths from cardiac arrest. There are up to 9,000 articles published on the dangers of Ritalin and the toxicity that it can cause in ADHD children. The risks associated with these ADHD drugs are well known but not published so much by the drug companies for very obvious reasons. The FDA continues to issue warnings but has stopped short of recommending that these drugs should be severely limited. Again, there seems to be a conflict of interest here. Why do we put warning boxes on packets of cigarettes? Because they can cause cancer and other deadly diseases. Why are there warning boxes on these amphetamine drugs for children? I will let you draw your own conclusions! Safety as an ADHD treatment efficacy criterion does not seem to have much weight in medical circles. Pity!
What about limiting side effects as a criterion for ADHD treatment efficacy? Surely that would be a good one. Well, the bad news is that there are significant side effects from these amphetamine drugs and children with ADHD complain of insomnia, loss of appetite, stunted growth and irritability.
Visit any drug company sponsored website for ADHD and you will never see any reference to ADHD natural cures because they are frowned upon. Apart from the profit criterion, it is hard to see why. These ADHD natural and homeopathic remedies for ADHD have no side effects and have been shown to be risk free as well. They are also much cheaper! Isn’t it time you sought a safer, gentler treatment for your ADHD child which will help him to grow into a healthy well-balanced adult? What are YOUR criteria for judging the efficacy of treatments for ADHD? Find out more from the link below this article.
