ADHD Treatment Efficacy - What Criteria Can We Use?
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 04th, 2009
It’s unbelievable but the drugs companies are still raking in handsome profits for ADHD drugs, even when there is a recession which will take 80 years to recover from. Adderall XR provided a lot more revenue for the pharmaceutical company manufacturing it - in fact revenue shot up by 16.5% in the last quarter. Prescriptions for Vyvanse, another popular ADHD drug, rose by 102% this quarter compared to 2008. If we were to judge ADHD treatment efficacy just by the sheer profits they are generating, we might be fooled into thinking that these psychostimulant drugs must be the ideal cure for ADHD !
Nothing could be further from the truth, believe me. Let us throw the profit criteria out of the window as there are too many conflicts of interest there. It seems that certain aspects of the Hippocratic oath have been conveniently forgotten by some doctors when judging or deciding on the efficacy of treatments for ADHD. What about safety as a criterion for ADHD treatment efficacy?
Ritalin has not much of a safety record as it has caused some deaths from cardiac arrest. There are up to 9,000 articles published on the dangers of Ritalin and the toxicity that it can cause in ADHD children. The risks associated with these ADHD drugs are well known but not published so much by the drug companies for very obvious reasons. The FDA continues to issue warnings but has stopped short of recommending that these drugs should be severely limited. Again, there seems to be a conflict of interest here. Why do we put warning boxes on packets of cigarettes? Because they can cause cancer and other deadly diseases. Why are there warning boxes on these amphetamine drugs for children? I will let you draw your own conclusions! Safety as an ADHD treatment efficacy criterion does not seem to have much weight in medical circles. Pity!
What about limiting side effects as a criterion for ADHD treatment efficacy? Surely that would be a good one. Well, the bad news is that there are significant side effects from these amphetamine drugs and children with ADHD complain of insomnia, loss of appetite, stunted growth and irritability.
Visit any drug company sponsored website for ADHD and you will never see any reference to ADHD natural cures because they are frowned upon. Apart from the profit criterion, it is hard to see why. These ADHD natural and homeopathic remedies for ADHD have no side effects and have been shown to be risk free as well. They are also much cheaper! Isn’t it time you sought a safer, gentler treatment for your ADHD child which will help him to grow into a healthy well-balanced adult? What are YOUR criteria for judging the efficacy of treatments for ADHD? Find out more from the link below this article.
Essential Oils and Toenail Fungus
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 04th, 2009
When deciding for a treatment to eliminate nail fungus once and for all, not everyone of us prefers the use of chemicals and pharmaceutical products. Nature has always provided us with a form to heal ourselves from the most varied infections and diseases. In the pursuit of this natural cure, many people resort to essential oils.
What are essential oils?
They are aromatic oils extracted from plants. Their therapeutic uses are widely known from long traditions and confirmed by modern scientific research. Nowadays, the use of essential oils is revitalized by the popularity of homeopathic medicine. Other uses of essential oils are applied to aromatherapy, cosmetics and even flavoring.
Nail fungus infections are tough, but there are two types of essential oils that have the penetrating power and action to get to the fungus and eradicate it from your toes or fingers. These are the Tea Tree Oil, and the Oregano Oil.
Tea Tree Oil is extracted from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia, and Australian plant. This oil is a known anti fungal agent and a potent antiseptic, scientific research made mostly in its country of origin have confirmed its properties.
Oregano oil is one of the most effective natural remedies against nail fungus. Since this essential oil is believed to be a fungicide it has been used in many nail fungus products. This is also due to the fact that oregano oil contains antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-parasitical, antiviral, analgesic and antifungal properties. Basically, all these factors add up to a great remedy and destroyer for nail fungus.
As I said earlier in the article, now, thanks to homeopathic medicine is easier to find these products. And they constitute a powerful option for nail fungus treatment. Essential oils have always been around us, and much of the knowledge we had about them is being rediscovered. Although if you don’t get a satisfactory result for these natural treatment, you will have to look for other proven options such as oral medication. Essential oil treatments are to be applied daily, a single day missed, can mean taking several steps back.
Nail Fungus Products - Are They Worthy?
Posted by sleepyguy in Prescription Sleep Medicine, Sleep Disorder on May 04th, 2009
Since nail fungus made its appearance on Earth, people have tried many ways to get rid of it. Plants, surgeries, solutions, you name it. As certain solutions and medicines were discovered, and with the appearance of commerce, countless remedies were sold. This still happen nowadays. New products pops up once in a while in the market with an exclusive formula, but… are they worthy?
As with any industry, there are good, working products, and some others that are plain scams. Some products even promise to get rid of the fungus for good, but what they actually do is just fight the fungus in a very ineffective way. There are 2 things you need to know:
1. Nail fungus creams are not 100% effective by themselves. Creams are used as a complimentary treatment, alone they do very little. Doctors recommend use of creams along with pills for these reason, and months of using a cream will do not much for you.
2. There are proven pharmaceuticals that will help you get rid of fungus. I talked about pills before, they belong to the group of working nail fungus methods. These medicines will in fact, help you grow a new healthy nail. Oral treatment include the use of Itraconazole (Sporanox), Fluconazole (Diflucan) or Terminafine (Lamisil).
Of course if you prefer to go the natural way, the proven methods get a little blurry. Essential oils can help fight the fungus, but sometimes these so called “natural products” are produced without a proven formula. They’re made with presumable working herbs, but is never tested properly. In those cases when you’re not sure where to buy or not, you can find help in the web. Many people in forums and web pages have tried these products and you can talk to them, but keeping in mind that in some cases you will find people biased to certain products because they sell/promote them. If you have no idea what you’re doing, and even so; the best thing to do is consult a doctor or a specialist in holistic medicine. Bottom line is to stay informed and think about your health first.
