ADHD Pills

The misuse of ADHD pills by school children is an all too prevalent reality in the North American schools. In fact, it is estimated that 5% of all school aged children have ADHD. With that in mind, it is easy to see why the misuse of ADHD pills is so common in our schools. How are ADHD pills misused?

In order to understand the misuse of ADHD pills it is necessary to understand the effects of ADHD pills on the brain. ADHD pills are usually comprised of stimulant medications. Now, I know this sounds counter-intuitive since ADHD is attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. So why would you give a stimulant to a person who is already overactive? Well, the answer lies in the physiology (functioning) of the brain. The stimulants that are used to treat ADHD increase the amount of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for a variety of activities perhaps most notably the feeling of euphoria. These increases in the brain molecule dopamine are supposed to be controlled by dosage however some people respond to stimulant therapy with rapid increases in dopamine levels. These rapid increases in dopamine levels disrupt the patient’s brain chemistry even further and can actually lead to a worsening of the ADHD condition. These stimulants also have some other side effects such as weight loss, decreased appetite, and dependency.

The use of ADHD pills by people without ADHD can have several complications. These pills are usually some form of amphetamine which is a scheduled drug in the US. They can cause dependency and other behaviour common to amphetamine addictions. With the increase in ADHD in the North American population, there is increased availability of these stimulants. Experts speculate that the increased availability of these pills has lead to the misuse of the drugs by non ADHD people. This issue continues to be of concern to education institutions around North America and has prompted further investigations into the subject.
